Worried about a blood clot

Sellingsunsets · 02/12/2025 20:44

I've been having weird pain in my lower leg since yesterday, like a dull ache, the pain is in the back of my calf but nearer the bottom of my leg if that makes sense. No swelling or redness or heat. It doesn't seem to I be worse when walking I standing, it's just "there" if that makes sense. I do have had health anxiety but I've convinced myself I have a blood clot in my leg and it's going to travel. My son's dad won't look after him so I can't go to a and e tonight and I'm worried they will think I'm wasting their time anyway. I don't know what to do but I'm freaking out.

It won't travel to anywhere else by tomorrow. Wait for the scan. I have had multiple blood clots including a PE and with that I had clear pain in my back (that's where you feel it because of the position of your lungs). A raised D Dimer doesn't definitely mean a clot but it's the first phase of diagnosis followed by the scan. Things you can do now to help:

  • drink plenty of water
  • raise your feet and legs to make blood flow easier
  • rest but get up and move at intervals

Treatment is very good now. Don't fret about side effects, the major thing is sorting the clot out.

Oh don't. Ive actually got pain in the middle of my back

Maybe psychosomatic, which is understandable. You've got a few of us here who've been through it, please do try not to panic (yes, i realise that's easier said than done, of course).

murasaki · 08/12/2025 22:17

The not knowing and extrapolating is worse than knowing so tomorrow will be easier either way. We're with you.

Sellingsunsets · 08/12/2025 22:18

Thank you so much. I've got pain in my back but I do have gallstones and I do get middle back pain sometimes from that but I am very worried now 😔

I don't blame you. But you can't do anything right now, and will do tomorrow. Please try to rest.

If it helps, my big leg (thigh, rather than calf,) was nearly 10 cm bigger by the time I admitted something was wrong having been limping for a fortnight at least. And I'm fine. The NHS did well.

I know someone who recently passed away from a PE in her sleep so this is definitely fueling the fire right now x

Oh, I'm sorry, and yes, that would definitely make me panic. But you aren't them, you don't know what else was going on there. As I say, if they were very worried, they'd have called you in. What time are you going tomorrow?

murasaki · 08/12/2025 22:34

Off to bed, but keep us posted tomorrow , take care x

Well this is the thing. She said the d dimer it's slightly raised, and she needed to treat as though I had a DVT just in case, obvs I said I couldn't get back up there to get the blood thinner and she said that's my choice but it's recommended etc. she wasn't insistent. She just said she couldn't force me to have it. It's not until 2pm.

It'd be at one side, not in the middle. Lungs are either side not in the middle.

I know you're panicking but you just need to get through tonight. And the worst thing that happened to someone you know is extremely rare. It is very very unlikely the clot will travel that far before your appointment tomorrow. Take my advice about the water and keeping your legs propped up. Go tomorrow and take the blood thinners. This is all treatable. You just need to cope till tomorrow.

My hearts going mad and I've got palpitations, I'm really stressing myself out

this happened to me last week. I took myself to the a&e as I had been having calf pain and ankle pain for a few about a week which was getting worse. They thought it was unlikely to be DVT as there was no swelling or warmth to the touch but I said it was the only thing it could possibly be as there was no injury so I would like it ruled out. They reluctantly took my bloods and my markers were 5000 when 500 is about normal. So they then decided to scan my leg and I did indeed have DVT. They sent me home with a 3 month course of blood thinners. Hopefully that will sort it out. But just so people know, it can be DVT if all you have is calf and ankle pain and no other obvious signs. But they told me it is easily treated once its caught early enough so the most important thing is getting it checked and taking the blood thinners if advised.

PodMom · 09/12/2025 06:30

@Strawberrystar13 are you not on thinners for life now?

murasaki · 09/12/2025 09:37

I slept terrible, I was so worried. I've woke up with a really bad chest but Im not sure whether it's an actual winter illness cos I feel terrible, high temp etc or is it related to my leg? Still in a total panic.

murasaki · 09/12/2025 10:01

Could be either, it's easy to start feeling pains when you're in a state of panic anyway. I'd try to find something to do to distract yourself before you have to go out.

murasaki · 09/12/2025 15:17

I hope it went ok.

Sellingsunsets · 09/12/2025 18:12

They said they couldn't find a clot after the ultrasound but will scan it again next week to make sure but in the meantime watch out for the red flag symptoms just in case. I'm baffled. The lain in my leg is horrific today. They said the d dimer was only 0.52 so was only slightly raised. The cut off I believe is 0.50. I'm still very anxious that I have a DVT just because of the pain.

CherryRipe1 · 09/12/2025 18:30

I've just been through this, mine was red, hot. painful and swollen & I was worried about DVT as I'm disabled and can have periods of inactivity plus am slightly overweight. I had my D Dimer checked & it was elevated (DVT red flag)so I was given a blood thinner injection & ultrasound scanned (& rejabbed) the next day as it occurred on a weekend with less staff. Turned out to be cellulitis and dissipated quite soon luckily but was told to go to the GP if it flared again and to go on antibiotics. Please go to A and E or Ambulatory emergency care just to be on the safe side.

Hollyhobbi · 09/12/2025 18:43

I've had two DVTs, one in each leg. It was just at the top of my calf and not red or sore to the touch nor was the difference in size in my legs huge. It felt a bit like a sprained muscle but not very sore at all. Not everyone gets the classic symptoms of a DVT. Op were your relatives tested for clotting disorders?

murasaki · 09/12/2025 18:58

Sorry you are still in pain with no answer. Cellulitis is a possibility, you may need to go to the walk in tomorrow.

Horrorscope · 09/12/2025 19:51

I recently had a very bad pain in my upper leg and thought I had a DVT. Managed to get an emergency doctor’s appointment (on a Saturday) and the doctor said as there was no swelling, redness or other symptoms, it wasn’t a DVT. He was right!

ilovepixie · 09/12/2025 21:09

I had a blood clot in my leg. The pain was awful, it was a cramp like pain. I could hardly walk on it. The leg was also bright bright red and very hot to touch.
