Uncontrollable shivering last night but non today?

There's loads of bugs going around at work. Yesterday 3 people were at work ill. It's a job where we can be in close contact. They're there because they can't afford to be off.
Last night my hands and feet felt cold but weren't cold to touch. Then I started shivering all over. I've only ever felt this once that I can remember, with a kidney infection.
I took a couple of paracetamol and eventually went to sleep.

Today I feel more hungover than anything. I'm off work anyway so can rest.

Has anyone experienced this? I really thought it was going to turn into flu. Or am I deluded and it'll return? And did I probably catch whatever it was elsewhere as I hadn't been in work for a week until yesterday.?

My son had this last week, he was so cold but sweaty. About 24 hours later he was back to normal. My daughter had it yesterday and she's off school today back to her usual self. Really not sure what it is!

I had a night of uncontrolled shivering for a night last year and developed symptoms of a cold within 48 hours - it turned into full blown flu and I was quite ill.
Hopefully this isn't you @8008isbest but I think I'd be staying away from others as much as I could as a precaution until you know you're ok.

8008isbest · 01/12/2025 12:29

Thanks both of you. Yes I'm staying away from others.

Even when you felt cold did you take your temperature? I get this exact thing whenever I have a fever

8008isbest · 01/12/2025 12:32

@ickystickybubblegun to be honest I barely felt able to take the meds. But that's a good call. If it happens again I will.

I didn't sweat or feel cold or hot to touch.

I probably did sweat in my sleep though as felt as if I had when I woke.

Feeling cold and shivery can be a sign of your temperature rising quickly.
What happens is that your brain resets its thermostat to a higher number (eg 39.5 instead of 37) to kill off invading germs, therefore your brain tries to get your temperature up to that level. Your body being a normal lower temperature (37 ish) is detected as dangerously cold and you shiver to warm up until the “goal” temperature is achieved.

Of course it is actually more complicated but it’s a good overview.
You feel like rubbish but paracetamol and/or ibuprofen are good choices.
Hope you feel better soon

Iv head that uncontrollable shivering, and I had a kidney infection

Not fun at all, I was mega rough

lostatsea999 · 01/12/2025 14:29

I have had this for the past week the sweats, then coldness. Then again I've had flu before and when it hit I couldn't concentrate to watch TV, struggled to get out of a bath tub for 3 hours, felt nauseous so I'm doubtful this time round.

It just gets to a point in the day where I'll feel better and wake up each next day with it raging again. No matter how many pillows prop me up, how many times I wake up and drink fluids, blow nose, nothing helps.

I just come across this whilst searching for my own problem.

Also can be a sign of sepsis - what is your temp at night?

JDM625 · 01/12/2025 14:37

I too would have checked your temperature. Shaking like that from a fever is called rigors. Paracetamol and/or ibuprofen can help bring a fever down though. I know people will poo poo the suggestion, but personally, I'd also do a covid test.

BlueSkies2026 · 01/12/2025 15:46

I woke up and felt awful last Tues. OK on Weds. Full blown flu on Thurs.

Shivering is deliberate - your body is warming you up to create a less comfortable environment for pathogens and viruses. If you can keep warm and rest as much as possible.

I personally think you can have mild flu.

I don't have any other symptoms.

I've been resting today and haven't eaten yet. I've kept fluids up. I might eat soon.

@lostatsea999 I hope you feel better soon.

I was going to say a uti until I read all of your post. That’s exactly what happened to me a couple of months ago. I felt fine, a bit cold in the evening so threw a jumper on and then suddenly when into an attack of shivers. Got into bed because I was so cold and then started with rigours that were so violent they made the bed shake. However, I rapidly started to feel ill from that point, like I had the flu and by the next morning it was clear by the pain in my flanks that it was a uti.

I would definitely be wary with your symptoms that it’s not some sort of infection somewhere.

8008isbest · 01/12/2025 18:16

Thanks. My temperature is 37.3. I'll keep checking.

Possibly flu, the strain just now is horrible and you might get a mild dose if you were vaccinated?
