Is this the flu? I’ve never had a cold like this

Started feeling unwell Tuesday evening with a sore throat, aches and pains etc. Wednesday morning literally couldn’t get out of bed. It’s now Saturday night and I feel no better, worse if anything. The only time I feel remotely human is when I’m in the bath. I’m in bed shivering, bunged up, hacking cough, shooting pains in back and stomach, feel sick, diarrhoea. I have a huge week at work next week, specifically Tuesday & Wednesday that I can’t miss. Am I screwed?

Oh I’m sorry OP, it does sound like flu. I don’t think you’re going to be able to attend your work event.

I had flu earlier this year and it was 3 weeks for me to feel normal again, and even then I was still weak.

I wish I had some remedies to offer but sadly nothing touched it.

Andonthatbombshell · 30/11/2025 10:02

Probably flu as it seems to be more brutal than covid. I've only had flu once.
You just have to ride it out I'm afraid.

Thanks all. Somehow I feel even worse today. My legs aren’t working (they are really but they feel like they’re encased in concrete) and I can only lie here and cry. I’ve ordered a flu/covid joint test from Amazon. Can’t believe this has come at the most important time of my career all year. I’ve literally been working for months on this thing next week.

You can appoint someone to present it in your behalf. Just concentrate on getting better 💐

violetcuriosity · 30/11/2025 10:39

I would say the diarrhoea and sickness makes it sound like flu, we had it last Xmas it was awful. Definitely felt better by day 10 xx

Archymum · 30/11/2025 13:43

Did you get a flu jab this autumn? They are usually less than £20 at the chemist. Money well spent, in my opinion, to minimise the likelihood of getting floored and being unable to work/function.

SadlyNotATroll · 30/11/2025 18:29

It’s the flu. I didn’t get a jab this year for the first time in 15 years and oh how I regret it.

It is a total bugger, @SadlyNotATroll. I came down with it a few days before you (on Sunday) and I’m no better. Made an attempt at breakfast this morning and I was back to the bathroom. I did think about a pre-Christmas diet but ideally a less extreme one than this!

I hope you get your work thing sorted.

BlueSkies2026 · 30/11/2025 20:23

I came down on Tuesday evening. I haven't done a flu test but the fever broke pretty quickly, 2.5 days? I was total bed rest and soup and juice only, fever, vomiting etc.

The main thing I've struggled with since then is the bloody cough, and fatigue. I'm on a carousel of anaesthetic throat spray, sterimar nasal spray, to try and degunk my sinuses.

Currently debating whether to work or not tomorrow. It would definitely be WFH for a couple more days.

I often see the question ‘if a £10 note landed on your bedroom window, are you well enough to go and pick it up?’ as a indication if you have flu or not.

I remember having flu when I was a teenager, and I haven’t ever felt as ill as I did then. I certainly didn’t have the strength to go and pick up the hypothetical £10 note for several days.

Hope you feel better soon, OP.

And that’s a myth because flu can be asymptomatic, mild, moderate or severe. Not everyone is unable to get out of bed.

Yahoo! Life: Why Does the Flu Make Some People Sick but Not Others?

Yahoo! Life recently interviewed infectious disease specialist Jonathan Grein, MD, director of Hospital Epidemiology at Cedars-Sinai, about why some people seem to be more susceptible to the flu than other people.   Grein told Yahoo! Life the short ans...

Agreed. Yes, sometimes you will get flu and be completely unable to move from bed, but sometimes it can feel like an extra bad cold (or somewhere between that and the not being able to get out of bed version) or sometimes it can even be quite mild. It’s a spectrum.

Ugh poor you but do you realise you have now proved to all mumsnetters that you CAN post on Mumsnet whilst having the flu!
Take it easy

FoxRedPuppy · 01/12/2025 16:32

I've started with this today. DS has had it for a week, keeps feeling better and then he is floored again.

I'm actually entitled to a free NHS flu jab, but didn't get round to it as I just had so much on at work and life admin in general. I have manged to wfh today, sort of- with a nap in the middle

FoxRedPuppy · 01/12/2025 17:47

Oh god. Just made tea for dc, but thought of eating myself made me feel queasy so I’ve come to lie down again

JTA1972 · 15/12/2025 07:01

Hows everyone doing with this now ? I’m into the 3rd week and feel worse, aches, fatigue, dry sore throat, stomach upset not much of a cough though, achy legs and tingling all over specially in the morning.

BigOldBlobsy · 15/12/2025 07:04

I had similar and felt like I couldn’t move for 9 days straight. First time I’ve ever been off work for more than 1-2 days. Cough, temperature, headache, dizziness, shivers and chills, pain all over, nausea. I think it was Covid

PersephoneParlormaid · 15/12/2025 07:09

I started feeling unwell last Tuesday but Saturday was my worst day, I got worse day by day until then. Ive woke up this morning feeling no better. I’ve got so much to do, but it won’t get done.

Theonlyfatmiddleagedwomannotonmonjaro · 15/12/2025 07:10

Regardless whether its flu or Civid you sound very unwell. Rest, sleep, fluids and vitamins is probably all you can do unless you think you have an infection, in which case you'll need to consult a Dr.

In my experience of symptomatic flu is thst it hits fast. I have had flu 5 times in my 50 odd years on this planet and every time its come on fast. There's been no sore throat Monday cough Tuesday and in bed Weds. Its hit fast, like 3pm picked kids up from school. 5pm struggling to get off sofa to cook dinner. 7pm shivering in bed unable to do much else.
Hope you start to improve soon. Hopefully, you'll be over this in time to enjoy Christmas.

Er yes! Do you read the news much? That’s why I got vaccinated in October. They were reporting the severity of this strain back in September!

This strain won’t be included in the current vaccine
