Can anyone help with remedies for sore and chapped lips.My eldest DS(9)has had chapped lips for about 6 weeks now,the whole area around his mouth is raw and sore .We have tried lypsyl and vaseline but he is not always good at remembering to put them on and I have to say is also not brilliant when things sting,in the past they have just cleared up without too much treatment but we are now pretty cheesed off!Any suggestions welcome

I get very sore dry chapped lips and the only thing that really helps is Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream - a friend of mine always nicks loads to put on his psoriasis whenever he comes down, he says its brilliant.

Dont know whether a 9 year old boy would go for it though?

YOu can get a lip balm called Carmex from chemists which is really v. brilliant. The most important time to have any product on is overnight. To make it really work you should rub you lips softly with an old toothbrush first to rub off the dead skin on top so that the balm can work on the new skin underneath. Don't know whether he'd go for that either though!

I have badly chapped lips myself at the moment (have had sinusitis and been mouth breathing - convinced that is the reason!)
I am using blistex (used to be blisteze) - comes in a teeny tube and squirts out all over the place, but it is usually pretty good within a couple of days. Advantage is it looks like a wee tube of medecine rather than a lipstick, which might be more pleasing to your ds!! Hope he feels better soon, when your lips are sore it is so preoccupying cos you are aware of it the whole time!

second the advice about Blisteze or whatever it's called now.

susanmt · 10/01/2003 16:50

Great minds!

SueW · 10/01/2003 21:44

another vote for blisteze

SoupDragon · 10/01/2003 21:55

It's the Blistex with "formerly known as Blisteze" on the box. There are lots of different Blistex variations but only one of them was Blisteze. It no longer comes in that tube where you squeeze it a little and it keeps on coming out I swear by it.

It does sort of sting/tingle though but in a good way IYSWIM! And it stops stinging/tingling quickly.

Lather lots of vaseline on at night time too.

It does come in the little tube that you cant control! I bought some yesterday!

WideWebWitch · 10/01/2003 22:29

I remember that tube, although I haven't bought any for ages. You have to jam the lid on pdq or you end up covered in it.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2003 09:28

Oh, I thought my last one came in a plasticy tube... maybe I'm getting it mixed up with another of the Blistex versions - I have several!

lou33 · 11/01/2003 13:20

Lanolin based nipple creams are v good!

Dannie · 11/01/2003 22:14

I've found a vitamin B supplement can help, too

Auntiemabel · 12/01/2003 09:12

Boots do their own version of Blisteze which is cheaper, it is called Avert.( keep it in the fridge aswell.)Homeopathic remedies can be really helpful with this. When I get cold sores, NatMur really does ease and stop them in their tracks. Boots also sells this. (30c, tablets)
Good Luck.

SueW · 12/01/2003 09:21

Isn't Avert a cold sore treatment - the own brand equivalent of Zovirax? Contains acyclovir. Wouldn't recommend it for chapped lips.

Auntiemabel · 12/01/2003 21:03

yes I suppose it is but I always used Blisteze for coldsores so that's where the confusion(easily done, I hope)came from.
sorry......
