I have searched the local chemists and failed to find it and every shop was packed with people so I simply could not bring myself to ask for it at the counter.

it is, but you would have to ask as its normally kept behind counter with paracetamol and that kind of thing.

scattyspice · 09/06/2008 12:44

Kept behind the counter, you have to ask.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/06/2008 12:44

I think in supermarkets it's on the shelves. But in a loccal chemists you may have to ask.

belgo · 09/06/2008 12:45

DumbledoresGirl · 09/06/2008 12:45

scorpio1 · 09/06/2008 12:45

DumbledoresGirl · 09/06/2008 12:46

Yeah I know. I am normally the one here telling people to not be embarrassed.

I am just a bit low at the moment and can't take my own advice!

DG - I was back packing in Thailand when I got thrush. I had to find a pharmacy to sell me some treatment - they didn't speak english and the words I needed were certainly not in my phrasebook! I ended up drawing a picture involving a woman's nether regions and mushrooms - they had a good laugh in the pharmacy that day

DumbledoresGirl · 09/06/2008 12:53

God above - my drawing skills would not be good enough!

But at least you knew when you walked out of the shop, you would never see any of them again.

nothing is as good as plain live yogurt on a tampon and whacked up in there, smear a bit around the outside, layer knickers with some toilet paper ..

scorpio1 · 09/06/2008 12:57

you could write it on paper and give it to them. they will be used to people worrying, etc.

scorpio1 · 09/06/2008 12:57

ooh yes forgot about yog. works fabulously

Twiglett · 09/06/2008 12:57

you've had kids haven't you dg? ... go for the yogurt .. plaina nd LIVE .. not strawberry, strawberry doesn't work

oh you can eat it too to help

WendyWeber · 09/06/2008 12:58

At least nobody should recoil from you as they tend to when you ask for nit shampoo.

LOL re yoghurt. Never again girls!

I have had thrush once before a long time ago when I was a student and had newly left home. I endured it for weeks (maybe even months?) and tried the remedies recommended by others, viz yoghurt and vinegar. I walked around smelling like a chip shop and stuff oozing out of my nether regions for ages while the thrush got worse and worse. I will never forget the relief of finally going to the doctor (sour faced bitch that she was) and getting the pessaries. Never again!

Since I have just admitted that, I might as well admit that I have taken some Canesten today ( a pessary) as I happened to have some in the cupboard from years ago. It was 4 years out of date and you are supposed to take it at night but I took it this morning as I could not bear to wait until tonight, but it should still work right?

The canesten I am after now is for dh. He does need to take some doesn't he? Since I gave it to him, is it acceptable to tell him to go and buy his own treatment? You should have seen his face when I suggested he did this morning!

When you say take, DG...

I do hope that is a euphemism for insert

DumbledoresGirl · 09/06/2008 13:08

Oh yeah, I inserted.

Don't worry!

I don't think he does, actually - I thought not, and have found this:

(From nhs direct)

So you can spare yourself the embarrassment

There is another nastier thing that they do have to be treated for, I had it once but have happily forgotten what it's called - I had to take Flagyl for a week (strictly no alcohol ), DH just one dose.
