My dad has had a health check today, he currently does not had a diagnosed health condition.
his blood glucose level came back as 29.8 and his blood pressure was 160/105.
Is anyone able to explain these numbers and what they could potentially mean please?
In the meantime, a GP appointment is being made as recommended by the lady running the tests but will be at least a 2 weeks wait for the appointment.
thank you in advance.

He needs to get advice from a real-life HCP (not the div that did the test and sent him on his way with a two week wait for follow up). GP/111 this evening would be sensible.

Allmarbleslost · 27/11/2025 17:01

If that blood sugar reading is correct he needs to go to a&e

HippyChickMama · 27/11/2025 17:04

Was the blood glucose a one off reading or a HbA1c test?

Defiantly41 · 27/11/2025 18:21

I posted on your other thread in the Diabetes section. If the test was done in the UK, the blood sugar/blood glucose will be in mmol/l, a normal reading would be 4 to 7 and a level in the high 20s is dangerously high. The blood pressure is high but not dangerous in the short term.

Defiantly41 · 27/11/2025 18:24

This is what I posted on the other thread as I can’t link it for some reason. I’m a T1 diabetic and have been hospitalised/in high dependency unit with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the past

Ask for a ketone test - maybe the pharmacy can do this? With a blood glucose close to 30 he is in danger - if pharmacy can’t do it then call 111 to see if they can arrange it quicker. If he gets breathless or sleepy/hard to rouse (not normal sleepiness) call 999 or 111 and make sure they understand you are worried about DKA.
in the meantime make sure he drinks plenty of water, more than you think is possible eg a large glass every 30 mins, and if he feels up to it and can be accompanied, a gentle walk (both of which will help to bring blood sugar down) but NO vigorous exercise.
and he needs to eat as few carbs as possible until this is resolved - but he does need medical attention
I’ve found 111 pretty good for this, even if it’s just getting an emergency prescription for a ketone testing kit/blood sugar testing kit

that's really bold advice to give to someone without a clear diagnosis and could end up causing more harm than good.

He needs to speak to a real life HCP this evening (actually speak to them himself and not delegate it to his wife again) and get advice from someone who can actually assess things properly.

Defiantly41 · 27/11/2025 18:46

@Greybeardy, that’s why my advice was about contacting 111 and getting proper medical advice first and foremost. However, the medical treatment for high ketones is insulin and fluids - insulin gets rid of the ketones and water/fluids dilutes their acidic effect in the blood. I was in hospital last week for exactly this reason and was told to keep drinking water whilst also being on a drip and receiving treatment. OP’s father needs medical treatment urgently and nothing I said was to delay or supplant this

ukMummyof · 27/11/2025 23:06

Thanks everyone for your support. An appointment was made, however, after these comments he is going to call up first thing tomorrow morning for an urgent same day appointment. I’ll update when I know more.

little update, my dad had an appointment this afternoon and they’ve done him a blood test so we’ll hopefully hear back within the next few days about results. His blood pressure had come down to 148/90 too.

As an update, my dad had another blood test (the HbA1c test) as the other one was just a finger prick test and results came back as 110- he has had an urgent appointment made for tomorrow with the diabetic team.

@ukMummyof I’m so pleased he is getting the right kind of attention now. There are lots of support groups for whichever type of diabetes diagnosis he ends up with, and the technology today is so much better than even 20 years ago when I was diagnosed. And thank you for advocating for him, too

I do not mean to alarm you but He needs to go a&e, don’t wait, my kid was 110mmol, in DKA and was hours off dying.

ukMummyof · 02/12/2025 17:31

Thank you, that’s so kind. I hope you are doing well. His dad and cousin had diabetes and he’s unsure if this has been an ongoing thing for him as he’s suffered with very little symptoms which he had just been ignoring unfortunately. Just pleased he’s now on the right track and is being supported :)

I appreciate this comment but unfortunately my dad already is on edge about seeing the doctor and it took some convincing. Personally I would be very worried and would be going to A&E but there is no way he would go there at this moment in time despite him feeling worried about this situation, as he has his appointment with them tomorrow and the doctors are aware of his results. I will make him aware of this though. Thank you.

Okay, just if he gets any worse your to ring an ambulance please. 🙏 Hope all goes well tomorrow and they get him some good support. X

Hi I am just wondering how your dad got on with his diabetes appointment?

Hi I am just wondering how your dad got on with his diabetes appointment?

Hello, they have confirmed diabetes and has been given tablets and then has also been told to check his levels twice a day. I believe he has another follow up appointment again soon. Thank you for your concern. :)
