Attended dentist this morning for tooth ache in upper back tooth which had an older filling. I’ve had terrible nerve pain in the bottom too ( which she the thinks is just the nerves linking up).

she drilled out the filling and then put in a temp dressing and I’m back in 2 weeks to hopefully get a perm one in. She did say it looked good to try the dressing.

she said if it settles down with this dressing great and if not I’d be looking at maybe root canal. If I feel any more pain or not settling to call straightaway as that will change treatment options.

my nerve pain was probably up at 8/9 and is now probs a 7. Still sensitive to cold, still just achey, and bottom tooth still throbbing.

how long do I wait to know it will settle? Hoping a good sleep will help. I know I should have asked today but combo of injections and drill etc was just a bit all over the place.

online it says maybe 2/3 to a week for pain/nerve to subside. Would that be right?

thank you

Did she take an X ray of / assess the lower tooth? Pain can refer but if a tooth is throbbing pain whilst another is also having an issue it would need looking into. Often in emergency appointments only one cause of pain/ tooth can be assessed due to time constraints. It can indeed be a while until nerve pain settles. Has the pain ever troubled you at night? Or is it only in response to cold / sweet ?

She did take an xray but didn’t mention it again.

she did ask me whether the pain had woken me before, which it had.

she did a metal tap thing on upper and lower and only upper was sore. And then a cold air water test on upper which had me off the seat.

cold is the biggest trigger, hot not as much, not really sweet but not my thing anyway.

perhaps I just need to be patient!

thank you your reply.

She might have done that filling today to relieve some of the pain as often the temporary materials are "bioactive" so can be soothing to irritated teeth. I hope you get some relief and some rest and the lower pain is also dealt with Xx

Yes I remember she did say it has something soothing in it. will focus on trying for a good night sleep and reassess in the morning.

thank you

You're welcome x

I had the exact same and they put biodentine in it. I wasn’t convinced it had worked but it’s taken a good 2-3 weeks for it to settle and now seems absolutely fine
it had an older filling in which they drilled out and went down to the nerve to put this stuff in

Ah good to know. Not sure what the temp dressing is. It has a clove-y taste.

seems like I do have to be patient.

thank you

Oh I had that at first actually and it didn’t work (done by emergency dentist)
my own dentist drilled down right to the nerve and did this biodentine stuff. I’m due to go back and have the top bit removed so it can be topped off with a normal filling
