Might have to have this in future due to bleeding between periods. Anyone? Got one friend who had it and said it was ok- she had local anaesthetic. I had a lot of pain with an IUD and can't imagine putting up with pain for 1-20 mins for hyster. But I do not want a general anaes.

should say 10-20 minutes!

I had one recently, with general anaesthetic. Its only short acting, I was fine very quickly afterwards and went home an hour after I went back up to my room.

Sorry can't help with local..my BF had one years ago, and found it pretty painful, though didnt' take long. I was the opposite to you - being a total wuss - was terrified the surgeon would laugh and insist on a local, but he actually never does them that way. Apparently some places have the facility to do local, some don't - so best be prepared to talk it through with whoever is doing it.

Oh yes I had one, together with a laporoscopy.

Afterwards you will be crampy and have a period like bleed. You will probably also have some shoulder pain (they fill you with air so they can see what's going on).

You will be unconscious for 40 minutes, I was admitted at 8am and home by 1pm and that included an extra two hours in recovery - because I had a bad reaction to the drugs.

My friend had one a few weeks back with just a local- my gynae, who is brilliant and very well respected, does them with nothing, or a local or a general- i think I could choose. I see him privately, in London. Hoping I won't have to have one at all- but you never know!

Thanks.

you could have a regional block, too. most anaesthetists would be willing to do it that way.

girlnextdoor · 08/06/2008 22:53

do you mean an epidural?

Don't fancy that- think I'd just go with the pain tbh. Had an IUD fitted once and it was painful, but tbh I am not keen on an injection in my cervix, or a GA. It would be done at a very large p rivate hospital so i can call the shots pretty much over what I want.

be keen to hear from anyone who has had it without any anaesthesia of any kind.

Is it possible they could do it with sedation, rather than GA? I had my hysteroscopy done under GA and had no problems at all, although as I had a D&C and laparotomy for an ovarian cystectomy at the same time, I'm not sure I'd have noticed anyway, if that makes sense.

I know you don't fancy the idea of an epidural, but that should be safer than a GA. Hopefully someone can offer some better words of wisdom than me.

Take care.

i had it and was used as a study case for pain...

loads of students in the room! It was fine

i had no pain relief but felt quite crampy and had paracetamol afterwards

i am no stalwart but the thought of local or epidural seems OTT

its 20 mins maybe and quite pleasant - my uterus was all white and lovely!

girlnextdoor · 09/06/2008 08:11

thanks all- still like to know if anyone else had it d one with no pain relief/numbing of any kind!

Butterfly- that is interesting. my friend who had a local, said it felt like being poked with a sharp stick.

I can't see how it is much worse than having an IUD- the dr had problems getting it in, and it wasn't pleasant, but I think i'd rather have a few minutes of that, than the to-dos of a GA etc etc.

Subrosa- your ovarian op- can I ask what it was for? I also have an ovarian cyst which is small- 2.5cms- they are scanning me every 3 months to watch for changes, but I know removal might be on the cards in future as it is now 5 months and it isn't going away.

Had one under a local (my choice to have it that way) - was easy peasy. They filled me up with water though not air, and because I was the only one on the list having a local they didn't think to warm the water up, so afterwards I was shaking and shivering for about an hour! Very interesting seeing your own uterus though.

I had two hyrsteroscopies last year - one in August; one in November. I was aso having removal of adhesions at the same time. I had mine done under a general anaesthetic as a day case patient. I had to be in the hospital for 7:30am, and DH was able to pick me up about 6pm each time.

I was sore afterwards, with cramping, but that could have been the removal of adhesions, rather than the hysteroscopy. I don't know. I also bled on and off for a few dyas afterwards.

The effects of the general lasted a few dyas too. I was very weary and tired, and after the second one I had a very sore throat for a few dyas afterwards too.

I had been woried about the general beforehand as I'd never had it before. But going under was actually not a problem at all. I was suprised at how long it took to recover from it afterwards though, especially the second time 3 months later.

yes i was water not air!
