Bloody bloody hell - im going to go mad.

I have wax in my ears that i keep putting off sorting because when i put the olive oil in as advised by the doc, it gets worse. But of course they wont syringe it til i soften it.

So, today i take DD swimming and my ears "popped" it must have dislodged some wax (unpleasant tmi) and now it is driving me mad. Its all i can do to stop myself heading for the cotton buds.

Is there anything i can do to stop the ringing, and deafness - its totally disorientating, and it hurts a little.

have you triend holding nose and blowing down???..although people with shout at me, i use a hair grip(my own, not used for anyones hair) to clean my ears out..i get lots of wax and every now and then its the only thing to get it out...however on hol in cyprus last year dp used cotton bud after swimming and went through months of deafness, olive oil etc but doc did eventually sringe ind it worked a treat!

DP uses Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops from the chemist to soften the wax before he gets his ears syringed -he said its fantastic stuff, it almost fizzes as it breaks down the wax.

wonderwomanakaeandh · 08/06/2008 21:07

I know you are meant to do this but I put some of that earax stuff in and tehn sleep with my blocked ear on a warm hot water bottle the wax that comes out is gross

wonderwomanakaeandh · 08/06/2008 21:08

obviosuly put an old pillow case over hot water bottle

lucyellensmum · 08/06/2008 21:20

but i want it to stop NOW

I hair grip my dh when he has this problem.
It always works.

Sidge · 08/06/2008 21:37

Yikes to those of you that use hairgrips etc - perforated eardrums are not nice!!

To LEM - the oil will make it worse until you have them syringed, as it will soften the wax and make it spread and make them feel even more blocked. However syringing without prior oiling is more painful and less likely to be successful.

If it's driving you mad tonight DON'T go digging around in there, you could do yourself some damage. And a cotton bud is the same diameter as your ear canal and will just shove all the wax up against your eardrum.

Put some olive oil that you have warmed into your ear, massage around the front of your ear (where it meets your cheekbone) and lie on a warm hot water bottle for 20 minutes (wrap it in a teatowel first).

Then make an appointment tomorrow to see your practice nurse and get them syringed!

frootloop · 08/06/2008 21:52

these are brilliant i use these all the time.

notreallyhappening · 08/06/2008 21:54

Otex ear drops? Stops need for syringing.

lucyellensmum · 09/06/2008 09:04

owwwwwwwwwwww it still hurts this morning. I didnt have any olive oil in the house last night so didnt do anything. I might try some otex today.

Sidge, how long do i have to do the olive oil thing before i get them syringed? I'm not squeemish at all so i dont mind getting it done, but i have an aversion to pain (im funny like that )

ear candles.
have no idea what they do but have always been intrigued by the name.

EffiePerine · 09/06/2008 09:19

Otex is no good. Olive oil or sodium bicarb drops.

Don't use ear candles, they are a load of hokum.

Use drops for at least a week if your ear is really bunged up (better up to 10 days).

If it's hurting, go to the nurse/gp as you may have an ear infection (I had one last year and it was hellishly painful). They can prescribe analgesic ear drops.

frootloop · 09/06/2008 09:46

effie,

why are ear candles hokum? ive been using them for years and years and ive done tests to see if its all fakery.

they work brilliantly

AitchTwoCiao · 09/06/2008 09:48

what tests have you done? they've caused terrible burns, afaik.

Sidge · 09/06/2008 10:17

LEM if you oil like mad and the wax is soft 2-3 days should be plenty.

I would make an appt for maybe Wednesday this week, if it's not looking soft enough they can always rebook you.

frootloop · 09/06/2008 12:29

not very scientific tests but i burnt one down to see if wax was just dribbling down to look like ear wax, it didn't.

then i pierced a hole in a jamjar lid, put the lid on the jar tightly, put the candle in and sealed it with blu tak to make a vacuum to imitate the ear and burnt one again, same result.

FruitynNutty · 09/06/2008 12:37

Audiclean is fantastic. Depends how bunged up it is though. It might be too late in which case you need to get it syringed. I actually enjoy getting it done I feel amazing afterwards! lol

I can feel my ear blocking up again actually, You've reminded me to go and buy some audiclean

lucyellensmum · 09/06/2008 13:18

frootloop, you are proper mad you are . Im off to buy some Otex, i dont trust myself with anything you have to set light to

OP posts:
frootloop · 09/06/2008 13:21

oh i did those tests about 10 years ago, i also used to do the candles by myself using a mirror, harriet and the matches springs to mind now i think of it.

Sidge · 09/06/2008 14:42

Otex can be quite harsh, I would stick to oil.
