Migraleave- makes migraines worse? / more frequent? If so which over the counter works for your hormonal migraine?

Have fairly recently discovered Migraleave as it was recommended to me by a pharmacist at Boots for migraine.

Worked really well at first, but noticing that recently it doesn’t work as well and then migraine returns quickly but worse than before.

I try to keep it to minimum use- once or twice a month only.

On reading about codeine, I found lots of info saying don’t take codeine for migraine.

So what is the best over the counter painkiller that works for you? Particularly hormonal migraine.

I am under a neurologist and on amitriptyline but still need painkillers …

many thanks

Migraleve should be banned IMO. It's a terrible medicine for migraines and leads to MOH. Caused me huge problems.

See your GP. Frovatriptan taken preventatively is highly effect. I need it 5 days a month, but managed to only have one mild day of migraine this week, not the usual 5 days of hell. I'm not great at consistently taking the first one which is how I ended up with an attack at all.

Migraleve also slowed me down. I didn’t realise how much till I stopped taking it

I find any painkillers useless on their own but useful with a triptan such as imigran (sumatriptan)

Tje only really effective one for me is codeine based but I use them rarely

My daughters suffered with hormonal migraines. With the youngest still having them we have found anadin to be effective, it was by chance as she had one coming one and it was all the shop had.

ChachaIntheLongrun · 20/11/2025 17:16

I use it. Thankfully my period issues are short lived and spread out on various days. It seems to help me. I have some sort of life long fatigue so not sure does it slow me down, am I old or whatever. I don't take it more than once a month and sometimes just take paracetamol and double this

My daughter takes ibuprofen for hormonal migraines.

My go recommended aspirin for me alhough my migraines aren't hormonal.
Also I'm seeing a neurologist and on other medication now.

StrumpersPlunkett · 20/11/2025 17:28

Sumatriptan isn't over the counter but the 100mg dose works for me.

Zippedydodah · 20/11/2025 17:29

The neurologist told me to take 900mg aspirin and prescribed an antiemetic.
After having migraines for 50 years I finally have something that actually works (believe me, I had tried everything available from the gp and the pharmacy)
I ended up in hospital on a drip and having morphine the last time and that’s when the neurologist told me to take aspirin.
It’s like a miracle cure! Plus ice packs on the back of my neck and over the top of my head if needed.

@PinkFootstool and @Rocknrollstar
wow ok thank you, that’s very helpful!
I thought something was strange.
It’s super expensive too!

Triptans work very well for me - was initially taking sumatriptan until that stopped working, now use zolmitriptan. Prescription only, but it's a standard migraine abortive that your GP will be able to prescribe.

mechanicalpencil · 20/11/2025 19:22

Thank you for all the recommendations.

I have tried the triple dose of aspirin at the first sign of aura but was told to stop by the neurologist due to Gastro issues.

@Zippedydodah I am so pleased for you. I have been struggling for 30 years and like you have tried everything under the sun. How wonderful it must feel to have found something that works! after all the decades of suffering. It gives me some hope.

Ibuprofen worked today … but am also not supposed to be taking that either…
