22mo's poos are nearly always sloppy - why, when he eats normally and seems fine?

He often poos twice in one day then not at all the next day. Sometimes he goes 2 full days without pooing. But when he does go, it's nearly always sloppy. His tummy also looks very tight and swollen after his evening meal (but maybe that's normal for a toddler?)

Why could this be? An average day's meals would be:

Breakfast: cornflakes or 1 weetabix, banana, half a piece of toast with jam

Lunch: chicken, couscous, peas with creme fraiche, fruit puree

Dinner: Mashed potato and carrot, yoghurt, half a pear

Snack: a piece of cheese, a plain biscuit

He drinks a bit of fruit juice at breakfast as well as a cup of milk, and water with all other meals.

Any ideas?

It could be toddler diarrohea (sp?)

Some toddlers always have sloppy poos. DS did.

Othersideofthechannel · 08/06/2008 16:41

If it is, they just grow out of it.

castille · 08/06/2008 16:44

When did he grow out of it, otherside?

I'm a bit worried about toilet training as his nappies are so unpleasant!

Have just googled it and it seems TD can be severe and needs treatment.

Does he have any tummy ache? Because chronic constipation can also leads to sloppy poos.

Nbg · 08/06/2008 16:47

My ds is like this too.

Isnt it odd.
I've been putting it down to too much fibre in his diet but I've even changed what he eats and its made no difference.

Othersideofthechannel · 08/06/2008 16:48

DSs nappies were hideous compared to DDs. Much messier and much smellier. He was pretty late to toilet train (3.3).
His poos firmed up somewhere between 3 and 4.

castille · 08/06/2008 16:49

I don't think so - he never seems to be in any pain.

I wondered about some kind of food intolerance, or a parasite

Hey Nbg, did the clothes make it ok?

castille · 08/06/2008 16:54

Nbg - I've tried a low fibre diet too but it just meant his sloppy poos were every 3 days rather than every other day!

Otherside - it's reassuring that it sorted itself out.

I'm not excessively worried because he definitely doesn't seem ill and is growing fine, but still, it's Not Nice.

Heck, how am I going to get him into maternelle if he isn't out of nappies til 3+?! What did you do, otherside?

He didn't start until he was 3.6 and went straight into petite section. (March birthday)
It wasn't a problem because I was on congé parental at the time. I took 2 yrs after DD was born.

geekgirl · 08/06/2008 17:08

ds had TD, he did fine with toilet training though (at 2 years 10 months IIRC, took less than a week). He just needed to go to the toilet rather frequently! I has got better recently, he's 4.5 years now and we're down to two poos a day (from the previous 6-8). He is a big strapping boy and always has been - he towers above the rest of his nursery class and wears 5-6 or 6-7 clothes, so it obviously wasn't detrimental to his growth.

Nbg · 08/06/2008 17:10

Oh, do you know I've been meaning to email you for ages!

Yes they did arrive.
Thank you very much for them. They are great and the sleeping bag has come in very useful.

castille · 08/06/2008 17:21

Geekgirl - eek all those nasty nappies! That doesn't sound like my DS though - he doesn't go that often, or even every day.

Did anyone get a doctor's diagnosis?

DD is eighteen months, and we have just the same thing. She has some food intolerances, but that doesn't seem to make any difference to the poos.

We've put it down to teething on the back molars - but it has been going on for ages (as, though, have the molars, which have been coming through since Christmas). But perhaps I should mention it to the dr.

From what I've read about toddler D, I think there's much more bits of undigested food in it though - do you get that?

thehairybabysmum · 08/06/2008 19:47

my ds is now 30 mths and has been potty trained since easter. Previous to this his poos always sloppy...i used cotton nappies and was always emvious of the posters on here who used fleece liners they could just knock the poo off..if only!!!!

Anyway since he's been pooing on potty his pos are 'normal' poo. I was talking to a friend the other day about it (as you do) and she thought it was maybe the mix of wee and poo together in a nappy that makes it sloppy. Seemed to make sense to me.

If my ds did ever have a tummy bug and proper diahorrea it was kind of watery with bits rather than just sloppy poo IYSWIM.

castille · 08/06/2008 20:24

The only undigested food I see are occasional peas and a bit of potato skin. It doesn't look or smell like proper diarrhoea, it's not watery. I did wonder what it would look like unsquashed by bottom in nappy

It could be teeth-related as he seems to have half a mouthful coming through at the moment, and there have been times when his poos have just rolled off the liners!
