ds keeps going for a wee!

Think I should take him to the doctor. Seems fine in himself but keeps going for a wee - every 5 minutes sometimes - and it's not as though he's drinking that much. He says it doesn't hurt. He's 5 and still not dry at night. Wondering if it's habit, or maybe psychological (a very emotionally uptight little thing). Any ideas gratefully received.

I think it depends on how much is coming out. Sometimes kids can have an irritable bladder, they wee so often their bladder sends messages to the brain telling it that it's full so it makes the child want to wee too often. It can be hard to break this so you may be better off speaking to your health visitor if she is any good.

I don't really know how much he is doing tbh, but I don't think it's much. Maybe HV could be of help, although haven't spoken to her for ages.

You can use a HV at any age, some of them are useful. I would probably take him to the GP with a sample to check for an infection first though. I think it would be a case of conincing him that he doesnt need to go all the time, a sticker chart may help. By holding it, he'll alter the sensors in the bladder which tell the brain he needs a wee. They are probably too sensitive. You have to be careful with this though, you need to check if he's only doing little bits of wee as it could cause problems if he's producing alot of urine. Have a chat with the Gp or HV.

Thanks avenanap, that's really useful. I have a really nice gp so think I will make her my first port of call.

My DS was like this at 5 or 6. It wasn't all the time but give him a drink and he could go about 5 or 6 times in an hour.

I think it was part habit with him. There appeared to be nothing physically wrong with him and it did eventually stop.

He tended to do it at home when he was bored or tired. Sometimes he used to go at school a lot and that perhaps was an escape from the classroom (also emotionally uptight). In the end I tried to stop him going for 5 minutes. Sometimes he forgot and didn't go for half an hour, sometimes he went after 5 minutes but in the end it stopped being an issue.

I say it has stopped but give him a drink and he will be going to the loo within half an hour, sometimes less and he will often go twice in very quick succession but nothing like when he was younger. He doesn't seem to have a very large bladder.

However as avenanap says, it might be best to get him checked out, just to be on the safe side.
