he seems to look at things sideways, he often turns his head and looks out of the corner of his eye when he is watching tv or reading a book and sometimes when he is having an interesting conversation with someone. Do you think he could have a problem with his eyesight, or is it just a way of concentrating? He's 4 btw.

wouldn't hurt to have his eyesight tested. tis free so you may as well.

Sounds like a good time to get eyes tested

LIZS · 08/06/2008 13:58

have you had his hearing tested , I used to do that in order to hear better. They normally get a sight screening during the Reception year from HV's anyway so maybe you could ask for it sooner than later.

Get his eyes tested - it's free and most opticians are open on Saturdays so he won't need to take time off school to go! Get his hearing tested as well so you've got all your bases covered!!

I haven't had his hearing tested, I will, I hadn't even thought about it. I'll get his eyes done too. Can a HV do it or should I see an optician? I hope he doesn't end up with glasses, I can't afford nice ones!

DS was tested at 3 and a half, it was a standard check if you know what I mean. I would ask your HV as I thought they tested everyone.

Furball · 08/06/2008 14:07

just take him to any reputable optician the hv cannot test properly anyones eyes

theSuburbanDryad · 08/06/2008 14:07

Yeah, just pop him along to your local opticians. Don't worry about the cost of specs - in the event that he needs them you'll get a voucher towards the cost and most places (Specsavers, Dollond & Aitchison etc) do quite funky free specs for kids! It's not the stigma it used to be! I've seen kids come out of the testing room crying because they don't need specs!

SquiffyHock · 08/06/2008 15:16

I meant that he was referred to an NHS clinic - not that the HV tested him! All of the children I know went. DS's best friend got glasses so DS was gutted!

my optician on discovering my ds' lazy eye at 3 1/2 sent a letter to someone? refering us onto the hospital
