Potentially broken little toe

Before I went to bed on Sunday, I stubbed my little toe on the fitted bedroom furniture. A bruise came up inside of the little toe when I woke up (I didn’t check after I stubbed toe. Then after work ( first day as well) got home and bruising developed below toe.

I don’t have an issue with driving

Rest of the week was training remotely. But rest of training which takes us to Christmas is in the office a 50 min - 60 min drive. Going on public transport is not an option

Pain has slightly subsided but it’s still painful, swollen but bruising has almost gone.

Been taking ibuprofen. Volteral on toe, putting ice pack twice a day, putting foot up whenever possible and not made a difference. I have tried buddying little toe to 4th toe with micropore and it’s painful

A&E will say the above advice

I broke my little toe, the area turned black and it was very painful. I kept the toe strapped to the other toe and just let it heal. Paracetamol helped. Raising it also helped.

It wasn't even a week ago, it will be painful I am afraid. You just have to let it heal. Wear loose fitting shoes - i.e. trainers and don't do the laces up too tight - put ice on it and elevate when you can. Not sure about the mention of A&E - you know this is not something to go to A&E with don't you? You say you're fine with driving so not sure why you are mentioning the training commute?

I read once it’s quite common to break your little toe from stubbing it. Most people don’t realise they have fractured it. A&E at best will give you an ugly shoe to wear which is so over the top and a waste of nhs resources, or at worst tell you to do what you’re doing already.

I did this in my 20s (I am now 70) but didn't realise it was broken so I didn't strap it to the next one. It healed up but it's very bent and has been SUCH a nuisance - it sticks out and I have to be careful what kind of sandals I wear (can't wear pretty strappy ones) and the nail grows a bit funny. Also, with it sticking out, it is even easier to stub it again. Please try strapping it up if you can. Could you go to a small injuries unit place?

You’ve just bruised it. If it was broken you would really know it!! Broke toes are the most painful thing I’ve ever broken

I thought that... until I broke my thumb.

Absolutely- when I broke mine it was incredibly painful.

Not necessarily. When I had an MRI, it showed that I’d broken multiple toes historically and I’d had absolutely no idea. They’d all healed without any issue but the breaks were visible. I’d always been quite proud of the fact that I’d never broken a bone and then it turned out not to be true.

I broke my wrist (obviously not badly) many years ago and didn’t realised, thought it was a bad sprain, bought an otc splint with a metal bit in it. I only found out many many years later when I had a xray for a suspected broken wrist (massively painful and swollen) and was asked about when I did it. the suspected broken wrist was far more painful that the broken wrist!

Everyone has different pain thresholds, nothing we can do to change the pain thresholds we were born with. Some people will just feel more pain than others

As you don’t have an issue with driving can you drive to the training?

I broke my little toe by stubbing it on the vacuum whilst wearing flip flops. I strapped it to the next 2 toes for a good month and have never vacuumed in flip flops since.
