Iron tablets.

I’m under haematology for low iron, they’ve done lots of tests and put it down to medication. They have written to my GP to prescribe iron tablets.

I’ve previously had ferrous sulphate but it gave me indigestion and upset my stomach. Are there alternatives i can ask my GP for?

I have been taking ferroglobin but the haematologist said it’s not strong enough.

You could ask to try ferrous fumarate instead - I'm being put on sulphate for iron deficiency but my GP is has said that fumarate is the other option.

You can ask for an iron infusion if you can't tolerate tablets and iron levels are low enough

You can try ferrous fumerate. And eat iron rich foods w vitamin c containing foods.

probably would have been best to ask the haematologist what they'd suggest (based on what they think the underlying problem is, how urgent correcting the deficiency is and what dosing regime you had before). Some people who get GIsymptoms with ferrous sulphate on an old fashioned high-dose get on just fine with it at a lower dose. Some people get on better with ferrous fumarate.

I got on better with the medicine rather than the tablets. Tastes rank but doesn’t seem as harsh on the tummy.
