since March ds has had 3 x tonsilitus, 3 heavy colds, 2 (one in progress at the moment) episodes of d & v and an infection in his willy....... not to mention all the normal bugs he had during the winter months. Sometimes i feel he is permenantly sick...... he is well and bouncy a good weight developing well inbetween each bout of sickness but guess i am just paranoid as the other kids i know never seem to get sick as often!!! Please tell me he is not unique!!!
He is three by the way and in general throughout his life seems to get sick quite often.

my dd is always getting bugs and chestinfections

nickytwotimes · 07/06/2008 19:32

my ds is 2 and hasn't been ill fo ra while (touch wood!) but in November and December he caught loads of bugs.

Builds up the immune system anyway, so your lo is getting it over with now!

OverMyDeadBody · 07/06/2008 19:32

DS has a cold about once a month and two or three chest infections a year.

And numerous asthma attacks.

Sawyer64 · 07/06/2008 19:33

They reckon that young kids get 8-10 colds a year!

Hulababy · 07/06/2008 19:34

Fortunately not very often. Never has been TBH.

Has had half a day off school (Reception) last year through illness - that is it so far.

brimfull · 07/06/2008 19:37

ds 5-the occasional cold which used to be a problem for his asthma but since he's started on singulair he's fine

dd-16 is hardly ever ill.

both seem to recover quickly if they are ill.

claireybee · 07/06/2008 19:43

DD has had almost permanent snot since about october but not really ill with it. There have been a couple of days where she has been poorly but it doesn't last long

littlerach · 07/06/2008 19:45

Neither of mine are usually ill (tempts fate)

Dd1, 7, has never had a day off school.
She had abs a few times when a toddler, but we've been fortunate that she hasn't caught anything at school.

Dd2, 3, has had abs once for an ear infection. Think she had a cold last year, and a cough.

bozza · 07/06/2008 19:50

DS has not had any time off sick since he was in reception and he is Y2 so that is over two years although he had a few days off in reception (new bugs) and before that had no time off day nursery for two years. He has had two operations in that time but both in school hols so no time off for either.

DD is 4 and at day nursery. She has had one day off poorly this year and one day when she smashed her mouth up (over handle bars of bike) and couldn't eat or drink properly. She was sick last week once also. DS has not been sick for about 4 years.

fordfiesta · 07/06/2008 19:53

not sure that makes me feel better!!!! Those of you who's kids rarely get ill... do they eat well, ie like lots of vit c kind of foods. I wonder sometimes if ds just does not eat the right foods (not through want of my trying!!!) to help build his immunity.

littlerach · 07/06/2008 19:57

Dds do eat pretty well, but i htink it's also in their genes.

Dh and i are rarely properly ill.
I htink I have had abs once in my life. I never had d&v until having children!!!
Only things I suffer with are heyfever and period pains.

beansmum · 07/06/2008 19:59

ds has been ill once in his life, he is 4. He occasionally has a cough or a runny nose but nothing that would make me keep him at home.

HairyMaclary · 07/06/2008 19:59

ford fiesta - I have a baby like your DS! Since November he has had a UTI requiring long term antibiotics, 3 x perforated ear drums, had a mild heart murmer picked up, 1 x D&V and numerous colds, some of them heavy. He is just 12 months old as still breastfed! He eats well, is putting on weight, is developing normally but is constantly sick. I get quite worried but there seems to be nothing I can do...

HairyMaclary · 07/06/2008 20:00

My other son, who eats the same but is 3 has had 2 or maybe 3 colds in the same period of time!

DarthVader · 07/06/2008 20:02

DD age 8 - almost never ill
However she has not been in daycare as a tiny - I have heard that it is v good for the immune system to get a lot of illnesses as a child though.

snotbuster · 07/06/2008 20:02

OP has your DS just started nursery? Mine went through numerous minor illnesses the first 6 months he was there (at younger age though).

DarthVader · 07/06/2008 20:05

Does my dd eat well - err absolutely not. Pretty much no fruit & veg ever, very limited diet, a frankly shocking eater.

Maybe she is storing up no end of future problems but is uncommonly healthy so far.

She does get lots of exercise, sleeps well, and is a generally very happy child though.

fordfiesta · 07/06/2008 20:14

Hhhmmmm, i am hanging onto the hope that when ds starts school he is going to have a wonderfully strong immunity and never have a day sick at all!!!! He started nursery about 8 months ago but also goes to a different one when i go to college one day a week, a childminder once a week and every other w/e at his fathers which usually involves soft play centre (out of area) so i guess he is exposed to alot of different bugs.
Hairy...... you have my sympathies!!!! at least now ds is older it is slightly easier to cope with and he can tell me how he feels.......... when he was younger it was so much harder to judge how poorly he was!
i guess it must be in the genes a bit, i had a lot of general sickness as a child,as did my dad...... poor bugger has inherited all my bad bits!

DarthVader · 07/06/2008 21:14

your ds has had excellent bug exposure - should do wonders for his immune system, preotection from allergies, asthma, hayfever, autoimmune diseases like arthritis etc

It is v hard to deal with if you are working though

Nappyzoneneedsanewname · 07/06/2008 21:18

My dd who is 5 was always ill up till about 2 and a half - started school in sept and hasnt ailed a thing (touches everything wooden). My ds 19 months has been ill constantly on and off (contradicts self) since starting nursery in sept when i went back to work - like some miracle he has now been well (slight clear snot ongoing) for 17 days and im loving it. Im not hlding my breath though - i am kinda expecting him to be like his big sis. Is wearing!

Both eat well - veggie lover ds ...

Nemoandthefishes · 07/06/2008 21:21

my 3 always have something or other either all together or one at a time. Never a time when nobody is all well in this house!!! They are 4 and a half, 2 and a half and 1 and a half

fordfiesta · 07/06/2008 21:27

Yep.... very hard to deal with when working esp as ex dp lives 2+ hours away and cant really come here to help out!!! am lucky to have fairly supportive employers though(on the whole). nappy..... ooooh 17 days of feeling well, what a luxury!!!!.... find i spend my life with a sinking heart these days everytime we have a few good weeks ds wakes up with a snotty nose or has a horribly restless night and i just know we are in for another bug!!!

OP posts:
MargaretMountford · 07/06/2008 21:28

Am so lucky - ds is never ill (touch wood) - no days off for years

cory · 08/06/2008 12:32

My big brother was always ill, until he hit his teens; I was hardly ever ill as a child. We both had the same reasonably healthy lifestyle, we were both good eaters, both played outside a lot, both had vitamin supplements. I must just have been born with a stronger immune system. But once he'd worked through the bugs, my brother too became healthy.

Same difference between dd and ds- she always ill, he never; though in her case, we do think she is pulled down by chronic pain.
