Hey I know this is random but I am due for wisdom teeth removal next week at hospital I will be put to sleep. I am quite nervous does anyone else have any advice on how it will be? And after surgery too I’m obviously expecting to be sore for a while.
thanks

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed under General anaesthetic some years ago.
The operation went well, my gums had dissolvable stitches where the teeth were removed, so for a few days I had to drink fluids/soup through a straw, but this was only because I had stitches, you might not need them.
Give yourself a week or 2 to feel back to normal and ache free.
You will be fine and be enjoying the benefits soon 🤗

I had 4 out in January under sedation not GA, I was expecting it to be horrendous but it was absolutely fine. I was ready to go back to work the next day but wasn’t allowed. I was very pleasantly surprised. I hope it goes as well for you.

Advice from a few people:
Be careful about eating/drinking to reduce dry socket risk.
Use extra pillows at night.
Have someone look after you for the first day.
If your job involves talking, you might need time off.
Did you ask for GA, only asking as in my area, they don't usually do this. Think it's a good thing though, as my friend had it done under local and they didn't get it out. She had a lot of problems because they'd yanked it a bit so she had swelling and couldn't talk well until she finally got it out under GA, and (I promise I'm saying this as a positive true story) it was absolutely fine. If she'd done the GA in the first place like you, she wouldn't have had an issue. I do know other people who had no problems with local, but what seems bad is that if they fail to get it out during that, you have to wait ages to get it done under GA.
With a friend's husband, his was near the nerve. You can ask them about your x-ray, but he was ok after a while. He was older when his got done. The younger people I know who had it were fine quicker, but maybe that's coincidence.

@Pistachiocake Thanks for the message and advice! I did ask for GA 😊 ah I’m glad they sorted it in the end for your friend I can’t imagine that would’ve been very pleasant with them yanking the teeth around 😖 I’m very glad I’m having GA. Definitely sounds best to just get GA!
I actually think mine is near a nerve too which did worry me when they told me that but I’m just hoping it all goes well and will be recovered nice and quickly. Wisdom teeth are such a nuisance.

I had all 4 removed under GA in my early 20's. They kept me in for 1 night but I could easily have got up and left as soon as I came round.

I have had far worse pain and for longer with the extraction of a molar in the dental chair in my 40's.

I had one out under GA years and years ago and it was fine apart from feeling ropey from the anaesthetic itself. Recently I had to have one out at the dentist (never in a million years did I think I'd be brave enough!) and it's been fine. Make sure you have painkillers to hand, no straws, soft food for at least a week and sleep propped up. Whatever advice you get given, follow it to a tee and don't be tempted to poke at them with your tongue.

I've had a couple of teeth out under sedation and found looking after the wisdom tooth gap a bit easier to manage, I think because it's tucked out of the way. One more to come out for me at some point next year. Good luck xx

I had one removed each side under GA and my cheeks swelled up like a hamster's for about 3 days - every wrinkle and crease had gone! Not permanent unfortunately 😅

MirrorMirror1247 · 18/11/2025 20:29

I had one wisdom tooth out 6 months before jaw surgery as it would have been in the way, only one because I didn't have one on the other side!

The GA itself went smoothly. After I woke up and was on the ward, they told me they'd had some trouble stopping me bleeding so took a blood sample to check my coagulation. Sent home that evening with co-codamol, which I took, and then later threw up. I started bleeding again so off back to hospital in case I'd burst my stitches. All fine so sent home again.

I went to work the next day, but I really shouldn't have! I was dopey all day and my face was swollen and achy. Felt quite sorry for myself, although it was an effective way of losing a few pounds!

I’ve had all of mine out gradually, all under local at the dentist, it’s fine, take painkillers of choice for a day or two. Far harder was the time I got dry socket, worse than childbirth! Follow the aftercare instructions, I didn’t and got dry socket
