I definitely ate raw chicken and am on a downward spiral

Hi, I have name changed for this post - I have to post because I’m going absolutely insane and need to talk to someone about this.
we have had a hectic home life lately - lots of work in the evening, ill children off nursery, etc etc. on Saturday I ate a chicken stir fry out of the bowl I’d defrosted the raw chicken in. This is so unlike me - I’m an emetophobe and I am absolutely crazy about hygiene and chicken. As the dinner was ready I just saw the bowl and thought I’d already got myself a serving bowl. I only realised straight after finishing dinner when I was stacking the dishwasher and realised I was missing the raw chicken bowl. I went absolutely cold. I even remember that the bottom of the bowl was wet 😭 why didn’t I realise??

i ate about 9.30pm on Saturday. Yesterday I thought I was going to throw up in Costa, left, drove home, lay down. Nothing more. This morning I had one short bout of diarrhea. It didn’t happen again. This is frankly not usual for me as I suspect I have mild IBS.

i have hardly eaten since Saturday night and I’m starting to feel quite weird and not knowing whether I am ill or hungry. About an hour ago I had a bit of soup and bread and a malt bar to get some sugar into me.

what is going to happen to me?? My brain is exhausted thinking about incubation times and what I need to cancel for the rest of the week. I think salmonella is now less likely but campylobacter is typically days 2-5. I am going out of my mind. I can’t believe I did this and am terrified I’ll give it to my young children (I’m hand washing crazily). I haven’t told my husband as he’s in the worst week of his work at the moment with a million commitments and meetings - and he ate a bite.

uggggghhhh please please quiet my mind one way or another … or just something calming. This is like a nightmare to me and I can’t even think about the horror.

Absolutely nothing. If you were going to be ill you would have been by now.

Seriously? Yeah I agree with others. You need help for - what appears to be - serious health anxiety.

Just because the chicken was raw does not necessarily mean it was loaded with bacteria. I agree with others - if you were going to get an upset stomach it would have shown itself already.

My cats have helped themselves to raw chicken when my back has been turned without any ill effects.

The cat analogy is pointless. They are carnivores and naturally adapted to eat raw meat. They can eat a lot worse than us and be ok.

BunnyLake · 11/11/2025 15:51

You ate it Saturday, it’s now Tuesday. You’ll be fine. I ate some dodgy prawns at a restaurant once (didn’t know they were dodgy at the time). Shortly after I got home I started throwing up and had a really bad upset stomach. It was so bad I fainted twice. This all happened within a couple of hours of leaving the restaurant so three days clear I’m sure means you’re fine.

Bloozie · 11/11/2025 15:53

If you live in England or Wales, there's about a 4 in 10 chance that the chicken had campylobacter, and around a 5 in 100 chance it had salmonella.

The odds are ever in your favour.

Appleseason · 11/11/2025 15:53

You can calm down OP, if you were going to get ill it would have happened already.
Food poisoning, salmonella etc happen really quickly after eating.

PfizerFan · 11/11/2025 15:54

You'll be fine.

madaboutpurple · 11/11/2025 15:54

Hope you are ok OP, and I can confirm that in Britain it is Tuesday today. It might be Wednesday if you live in another continent/place.

Your cat also licks it's bum with no ill effect however I do agree with the chicken comment

DuckyLuck · 11/11/2025 15:56

Nothing is going to happen to you. Stop borrowing trouble.

HelloCharming · 11/11/2025 15:58

LostThestral · 11/11/2025 15:38

you'll likely be fine after this time.

Not all raw chicken carries food poisoning bacteria, it's actually eaten quite a lot in Japan

Came on to say this. I've eaten raw chicken in Japan.

Anyway as others have said, you would know about it by now, but stand a good chance of making yourself ill through not eating and drinking properly.

And maybe look into some counselling, this is quite an extreme response.

Its wednesday - you're ok

You scared me for a min! It’s definitely still Tuesday :-)

Hoppinggreen · 11/11/2025 15:13

When I got ill from chicken it was FAST
Ate it around 6, carnage at both ends by Midnight
If it hasn't happened then you are fine OP. Bear in mind that raw chicken does not make you ill per se, its only if that raw chicken had a bacteria on it that makes you ill and less than 50% of British chicken does

This is exactly what I was going to say.

Nothing is going to happen now @whatanabsoluteidiot . If you were going to be ill it would have already happened.

That made me laugh! 😺

EmpressOfTheThread · 11/11/2025 16:01

Does anybody know definitely what day it is?

MatriarchCaz · 11/11/2025 16:05

I've had Campylobactor, I was never sick, just awful Diarrhea for about 10 days, fingers crossed you will be fine x

AInightingale · 11/11/2025 16:06

Honestly OP, if you're going to get this stressed about meat - consider going vegetarian/plant based. This isn't proselytizing btw - I got atrocious FP from a beef burger when aged 11 and it really made me question eating meat and was a big factor in my giving it up! I would be very wary of chicken so I don't think you're weird. I hope you've no more sickness and that you're OK.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 11/11/2025 16:11

LadySable · 11/11/2025 15:17

Its wednesday - you're ok

You just made me have a massive panic as I am supposed to be somewhere at this time on Wednesday. 😂

Andromed1 · 11/11/2025 16:16

Most likely you'll be fine OP. Most chicken is NOT affected by salmonella. Your symptoms could be explained by anxiety.

MiddlingMarch · 11/11/2025 16:17

Echoing everyone else - when I have had food poisoning (twice), I felt the effects within 12 hours.

Seeing as it is Tuesday, you would have been ill by now (and most likely beginning to improve).

Jane143 · 11/11/2025 16:18

I’m sure you’ll be ok. By now you would be ill if it had affected you. When u think of people that handle raw meat and don’t wash hands and don’t become ill, should put this in proportion. You won’t do it again! You’ve been lucky

EmpressOfTheThread · 11/11/2025 16:18

Heads up when your kids get to the teenage stage - they cook up all sorts of concoctions!
Mine all survived both questionable midnight fry ups, and also uni accommodation kitchens that put me in mind of those dreadful extreme hoarders programmes.
They're perfectly fine!

AdoraBell · 11/11/2025 16:21

How did the chicken defrost?

BadgernTheGarden · 11/11/2025 16:21

You will very likely be fine raw chicken is only dangerous if it's contaminated, it is sensible to make sure it's fully cooked just in case, but you aren't ill!

FreeRider · 11/11/2025 16:22

Still not dead yet?

Vinvertebrate · 11/11/2025 16:22

OP, you are catastrophising.

I also ate raw chicken in Japan with no ill effects. My DH prefers his chicken legs pink and has never had food poisoning in 15 years.

Having had Shigella from crab meat, I promise that serious food poisoning leaves you in no doubt as to whether or not you have it, and no time to ponder over the cause of any malaise. Your body is designed to hit the ejector button extremely quickly. In my case, it was within 30 minutes of eating the evil gut parasite.
