Any underactive thyroid sufferers did it affect your menstrual cycle

Hi
I am going out of my head atm wondering if my cycle is irregular due to menopause/perimenopause or if its due to my underactive thyroid.
I have had irregular periods for the past 9 months or so and have even experienced 2 3 month absences.
My cycles have been anywhere between 23 days up to 62 days and again I am now on cd 40 with no period.
I really don,t know whether this could be menopause, my thyroid, or both.
I am 37 and my mom and sisters went thoruhg menopause between the ages of 38 and 40.
My tsh is now 8 so its come down from 19 if my irregular cycle is indeed down to the thyroid should this irregularity settle down once my thyroid is adequatley controlled.

hi, i have had over and underactive thyroid and periods have changed depending on the drugs ive been on. when i was overactive periods were very light and iregular, when underactive they were all over the place but quite iregular still.

I had irregular periods from the age of 19 until a year ago (I'm 38).

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about 6 years ago but it wasn;t until my latest increase of thyroxine that my periods suddenly became regular again.

I suppose it must be to do with my thyroid - seems a bit of a coincidence otehrwise, although I do have polycystic ovaries too.

I have had 5 week cycles now for the last year, after years of about 3-4 periods a year!

It's a bit of a shock, tbh!

Before my underactive thyroid was diagnosed, my periods where much as you descibed, could go anything from 4 - 10 weeks inbetween.

Calmed down and returned to more regular 4-5 week intervals once on medication.

I have underactive thyroid and lately have had really heavy periods, I had an ovarian cyst a couple of years ago which was blamed for some problems with bleeding then but that cleared up when the cyst burst. I am now having tests for Vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anaemia) which can be associated with problem bleeding. If that is is negative I am being referred to a gyanecologist.

Forgot to add that B12 deficiency can also be associated with underactive thyroid.

I have an over active thyroid and my periods are all over the place and have been for ages. Don't know if the thyroid is the cause but guess so.

If your mum and sisters went through the menopause at your age you are more likelt to.This is ver young thought and usually there is a reason for early menopause so i would see your gp.
A tsh of 8 is still high-what are your t3 and t4 levels and have you ever had your antibodies checked ?

I have been back to GP this morning and the test was negative, so I am now being referred for more investigation. For what it's worth I have been told that it is not menopause related in my case as my hormone levels are all normal.

What test was negative?

Did you get your hormone results back today also or did you already know they were normal when you posted on Sat ?

Your lab should have tested your t3 and t4 with a tsh of 8.0 and if you did have antibodies that could indicate auto immune disorders which could affect your menstrual cycle.
