Has anyone been sterilised?

I am going to be sterilised at the end of this month.
I am just looking for some details on the operation really, the hospital have provided only the standard information and I just wondered if anyone has been through it could they tell me how they got on.

Thanks

Hi Ludaloo,

I didn't want your thread to go unanswered but I might not be much help!

I've been sterelised but it was done while I was already open when I had my c/ section.

I felt I took longer to recover after that op than my previous two c/sections but that could have been down to it being my third in 8 years or the fact that I had 5 children to look after as well!

My tubes were cut not clamped as it was vital I didn't get pregnant again.

I wasn't sore after the op but I believe that is unusual - managing on a couple of paracetamol.

good luck for your op and HTH

thank you for your reply.

Well done you on having five children! I have three and feel that is my lot.
I'm glad it wasn't painful for you, I am hoping it won't be too painful.

I'll just have to see

I was sterilised last september, and recovery took quite a while. It was quite painful afterwards, mainly due to being pumped with air during the op, and I felt light-headed and faint for a good couple of weeks.

lou33 · 08/06/2008 17:41

dec 2001 i was done, after 4 kids

in and out as a day case, done with keyhole surgery

back to speed in about 3 or 4 days

(tubes were clipped)

i was told by the hopsital that it is better not to have done during a c/s, as everything is a bit more swollen than normal, so 3m after is good

having said that, it made no odds to me as i havent had a c/s lol

I was sterilised earlier this year. I ended up at a local private hospital funded by the nhs because the waiting list was too long for them to meet targets. I was in over night but only because I was done quite late in the day and I'm not good with anaesthetics. I went home the next morning and was out doing my family supermarket shop 3 days later. I felt a bit bloated and period type discomfort for about a week but nothing that a couple of paracetamol didn't sort. It wasn't really painful at all and is certainly the best choice for me. Good luck.

kiddiz · 09/06/2008 13:39

I had laparoscopic procedure hence the bloating. They fill your abdominal cavity with co2(?) so they can see what they are doing. Oh and the dissolvable stitches didn't! so I had to remove them. Not as bad as it sounds. I just cut them with a pair of sharp sterilised scissors to remove the knots which were irritating the skin. My mil is a nurse and suggested this. Don't think I would have done it otherwise.

I'm going to watch this thread! I am seeing Gynae tomorrow about being sterilised. Can you tell me what to expect at first app?

kiddiz · 09/06/2008 16:16

Whoops. At my first appointment the virtues of the mirena were yet again pressed upon me. Once I had explained yet again why I didn't want one (I had already been through this with the fpc and gp) the rest was fairly straight forward. They are required to discuss the alternatives to you and ensure that your decision is an informed one. They also discussed if vasectomy was an option. It was also emphasised to me that the op was not reversable and that they probably wouldn't try but would send me down ivf route if my circumstances changed and that this would almost certainly not be on the nhs. I think they just have to be as sure as possible that you are not going to change your mind at some point in the future. I'm 46 so that is extremely unlikely in my case so I didn't have to convince them at all, but a work collegue of mine was much younger when she went and she said they were much more reluctant.

I was stz a couple of years ago. I went in to hospital at 1pm on a Thursday afternoon and was first on the list - I was at home by 5pm and dosed up on pain killers, they even gave me morphine just in caes.

I went back to work the following Tuesday and was a little tierd but nothing major.

The great advantage is my periods are very light and only 3 days long - apparently it often has the effect of making periods lighter and shorter.

Milliways · 09/06/2008 16:37

It was quite odd when I had this done, as they have a whole load of you in for the same thing processed together - so it's quite an atmosphere!

First, you will have to do a pregnancy test - just in case....

We were given pre-meds and lined up in beds outside the OR. All had a general anaesthetic but you are only out for 12-20 mins?

The differences in recovery times was staggering. The girl next to me was dressed & going home before I could get my head off the pillow! There were 2 of us who thought we would not be allowed home (I felt very sick, hot & dizzy for a few hours) but as long as you can convince them you are OK, stagger out, collapse in car & rest at home

They also showed us all a PHOTO of the clips!! (Yes, of course I could tell they were MY tubes........)

Next day, MUCH better, but did get the shoulder pain which is common - from the gas!

Completely ok in just a few days

No regrets.

muggglewump · 09/06/2008 16:51

I had it done three weeks ago, there's a thread on here somewhere.
I was in agony afterwards(sorry) and they were pressing me to stay in. I couldn't, single Mum, no childcare so they only gave me a tiny amount of morphine.
I was really angry as they'd told me, I'd just ache a bit. I was incedibly sore and dazed for about three days and on strong painkillers. It really took a week for me to feel normal.
I'm glad I had it done but more warning to the reality of what it entailed afterwards would have left me better prepared at least. My poor DD had to fend for herself and I was really weepy too.

It is different for everyone though and I don't want to scare you, just let you know how it was for me

whoops · 09/06/2008 18:02

Thanks Kiddiz, My gp said that a lot of women she refers come out with a mirena but I have had one before and it didn't agree with me!
I am 31 in a couple of weeks, I know I don't want anymore and dh won't have the snip so I am hoping I will be able to convince them it is what I want.
I take it your work colleague managed to get sterilised?

kiddiz · 10/06/2008 10:27

Yes she did. I think she just had to work a bit harder than i did to convince them that's all! Good luck ..hope everything goes ok

whoops · 10/06/2008 10:37

Thanks Kiddiz
I have just told dh if they really want to see why I am determined to be sterilised I will take my dc's in so they can see why!

Ludaloo · 11/06/2008 11:23

whoops you sound a lot like me....my dh won't be sterilised, I have had three different types of coil...two actually came out on their own and one aggitated my cervix so much I ended up having a colcoscopy procedure (I think it was called that) where they have to burn the cervix to kill the cells, so normal (uninflamed) ones can grow back.
I can't take the pill as I suffer from migraines, and I tried the injection contraception but it made my appetite go through the roof and I couldn't shift the weight, plus I was soooooo moody!

Sterilisation is definately my next option, as I am totally sure I do not want more children.

Ludaloo - The dr was quite happy for me to have the op the only thing that may prevent that is my weight
They filled out the card to refer me for an app to have heart & lungs etc checked to make sure I am healthy for the op, I'm hoping the fact I had a ga when I was 2 stone heavier that I am now may go in my favour!!
