6 weeks of chest infection?

Knittedanimal · 03/11/2025 20:50

Started with heavy, uncomfortable feeling lungs which i ignored for a couple of weeks. Went to GP and got a two week course of antibiotics. Felt fine for 5 days then came down with classic cold symptoms, now horrid heavy feeling lungs again. Not keen on getting another course of antibiotics. Anyone else had similar? I wonder if it's just a thing doing the rounds?

Could you have uncontrolled GERD, worsening your symptoms?

Epicusernamechangefail · 03/11/2025 20:57

Go back to your GP straight away!! Sorry don’t want to scare you but my 6 week chest infection then turned into pneumonia and I was so weak I was having to crawl on my hands and knees as I felt so ill. I was diagnosed via a chest X-ray and sputum sample and spent 10 days in hospital with IV antibiotics. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn’t gone back to my gp when my symptoms didn’t change after my course of antibiotics had finished. Please seek help.

I had this, they can test your sputum to make sure they use antibiotics that will work this time. Mine was resistant to the first set. You need to get rid of it - persistent infection can damage your lungs

Also, my symptoms seemed to get slightly better too so I went back to work and then it got so much worse!!

Blimey, v sorry to hear you went through this. I feel very tired, I worked for four hours today and then had to go to bed.
Will go to GP again, thanks for advice.

Ah, ok, I hadn't thought resistance, only likely viral and so not impacted by antibiotics. Thank you.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me, but I also had to have a chest drain due to empyema. Don’t leave it any longer OP!

Yes please go back - you may need a different antibiotic to clear it.

off to Google GERD

I had similar. Took 3 different courses of antibiotics and then a course of steroids to clear it. I had 2 weeks off work then managed 3 weeks doing 3 hours a day (wfh) then had to go to bed for the rest of the day each day. Definately go back to your GP

off to Google GERD

Feels more lung than gastro.
I realised that I needed someone to tell me to do something...now I have no mum to worry about my every ailment, I'm just trying to carry on but stopping to think about it, i am struggling with stairs and just feel grim.
Suddenly 'mumsnet' takes on another nuance.
Thanks hive Mum x

This is the terrifying resistance to antibiotics coming into play - we're stuffed!

Me. Am on my seventh week of it now - I had thought it was improving but now I have cold like symptoms and feel freezing cold again. Cough still vile. I am so bored of it. Get well soon!

foodlovefood · 03/11/2025 21:26

I had this in the spring. Had antibiotics first time I had the cough. GP said my chest sounded clear but I had a temperature and horrible cough. Was also breathless.

got slightly better. Then a few weeks later the cough appeared. GP thought I had gerd. Was asked for poo sample and given medication. After 2 days I went downhill rapidly. Saw another GP was told give it time.

3 days laysr and 2 weeks before a holiday of a lifetime. I was worse. Cough was so violent I was peeing myself, sleep and couldn’t walk up the stairs.

GP again on Saturday morning. I got diagnosed without chest X-ray of pneumonia. Given antibiotics over weekend and told to return on Monday. Was much much better. But I did refuse to go to hospital and promised if worse I would go.

go now and insist to be taken seriously. To be fair I had a chest infection 2 months previously that hadn’t cleared.

Knittedanimal · 09/11/2025 12:09

I went to the GP last week and because i didn't have a temperature was reassured that i have a viral thing rather than anything serious. Was referred for xray so waiting to hear outcome.
Thanks for all your advice, was very helpful and pressed me into going back to GP.
