How long after D&V is it safe to assume that it's not catching?

My mum came down with D&V at some point in the night, not sure exactly when. No fever etc. last period of D&V was around 9:30 this morning.

So far the rest of the household is feeling fine, we've all been in contact with her in the last 24 hours etc.

If she's still free of it tomorrow morning, and the rest of the household is too, is it safe to assume it's not catching? Only asking as if the rest of the household is clear, I'll mask up and clean the entire house top to bottom to make sure it's gone.

I think the recommendation is 48 hours.

Scottishskifun · 01/11/2025 19:07

Generally 48 hours so you have a way to go before knowing the household is clear I'm afraid!

Wereongunoil · 01/11/2025 19:08

I think I'd clean anyway. Less chance of anyone getting it if it is catching 🤷

It's 48 hours for schools etc but I don't mean for that (if I'm clear of it on Monday I'll have to go into work, I can't stay off because someone in my household was sick), I mean in terms of the rest of us not getting it

She's confined to the upstairs, if she's still going I'm not going up there for any extended period of time

If it's norovirus (many D&Vs are) then it's a 12-48 hour incubation period.
Whilst I agree if you have zero symptoms then Monday morning go into work but your way too soon tk tell unfortunately.

Make sure you at least wipe down door handles, leave a antibacterial spray in the bathroom if shared for tap, door handle and loo flush. It really is that easy to pick it up.

Up to 48 hrs is the incubation period. So you probably want to thoroughly clean the bathroom now, and then 48 hrs from then you’re probably all safe.

Realisation14 · 01/11/2025 22:02

Yeah as a PP has said the incubation period is 12-48hrs if it's contagious. I'd still clean anyway with rubber gloves on, no need for a mask it isn't airborne except unless you're in the room while she's actively vomiting.

My son had norovirus earlier this year and it was exactly 48hrs later myself and my husband came down with it.

Turns out it was just the V, no D if you catch my drift, it actually started late Friday night and she's pretty sure it was food poisoning. Thank god! Seems we're all in the clear

It’s almost the worst bit isn’t it, waiting to see whether you and others will get it and the anticipation of that. We’ve had a child get it almost a week after a sibling - can’t be confident it’s the same thing but I’m always cautious in the weeks after and do extra cleaning. I’ve found the chance of spread has dramatically decreased now kids are old enough that they don’t vomit in their beds/everywhere. So presumably with it being your mum she’s kept things as contained as possible! Hope she’s feeling better soon and you all stay well.

Yeah bless her she’s fine today, which makes me think it’s food related. We’ve got the bedding on a hot wash and hoping for the best!

48 hours from cessation of symptoms general rule I believe.

It’s 48 hours for schools because 48 hours is how long norovirus is contagious for. So your mum is contagious for 48 hours. incubation up to 48 hours on top of your last contact in their contagious period.
