DD2 is 7 weeks. Breast fed.

In first couple of weeks she was pooing 7-8 times daily. Eventually settled to once a day/every other day. Now she hasn't pooed for 8 days. Should I be concerned - its starting to niggle at me.

She's otherwise fit and well, Content and sleeps constantly. She's just over 12 lb (7 lb 13 at birth) and has jumped from the 50th to the 91st centiles for weight.

She's trumping for breat britain and her tummy is soft and not distended. She does grunt and strain alot when her face turns bright red but all we get is fart!

Should I be worried? Could it be something in my diet? (which hasn't really changed much)

Mine have had this. Once dd went 10 days & then the floodgates opened.

Get ready for the biggest nappy ever!!! requiring emergency bath or if you're out complete change of clothes......

stuffedaubergine · 06/06/2008 09:50

yes have had this too
have you tried leg cycling

elfsmummy · 06/06/2008 09:56

No not tried leg cycling - have done some baby massage to no avail - will try that later thanks

I'm sure she'll lose at least half a pound when it finally happens!

my mil always did it (nb didn't work for mine but she swaers it did for hers) anyway just passing on MIL's advice quel horreur

wearymum200 · 06/06/2008 10:00

Normal. It will be an armageddon poo when it comes though!

stanleysmother · 06/06/2008 14:35

Be careful though - my DS1 went 10 days with no poo when he was 10 weeks old and when he did poo as Weary says, it was armageddon. Problem was that there was so much bacteria in it as it had been brewing for so long (TMI i know) that it got inside him (via willy) and caused hideous urinary tract infection and we wound up in hospital for 4 days on a drip. Was very nasty indeed.

In order to get the poo to come, have you tried drinking beer(you not baby)- worked for me when was BFing. Also orange juice on spoon for baby... freshly squeezed at room temp. Usually works
Good luck

baby massage - abdomen in a clockwise direction - should help.

I used to eat pears and that helped all the kids to poo!

Agree is normal - means that they are absorbing almost all the milk is good. But could mean a massive explosion is coming!

Poledra · 06/06/2008 15:01

My sis swore by eating grapes herself to get them moving.
DD1 regularly went for days without pooing. HV showed me a reflexology thing that seemed to work for her. Lie the baby down on its back, feet closest to you. Hold a foot with the heel in the palm of your hand, then firmly rub your thumb from the heel up the instep to the ball of the foot. Do this for a few minutes (I used to do both feet at the same time, one in each hand). HTH - at worst, your baby's had a lovely foot massage, at best, you'll be cleaning poo from ankles to neck

jalopy · 06/06/2008 15:04

Normal.

Don't go anywhere without a change of clothes for you and the baby.

Alert everyone.

Izzywhizzy · 06/06/2008 15:06

I agree with cupsoftea. In my experience it's most likely to happen when you're out and about with no changes of clothes and you're just put babe in the last clean nappy that you brought with you.

learningallthetime · 06/06/2008 15:09

Definatly agree with taking a change of clothes. My LOL exploded in John Lewis after a few days without poo .. TMI ..Sorry!

elfsmummy · 06/06/2008 18:30

Well she finally went - and I have to say I was disapointed! Was expecting at least a leaking nappy!

She did go again an hour later, so maybe it's just going to come slowly! Thanks for the reassurance

My HV told me its good not pooing as it means they are using every bit of the milk.
