Is this a migraine?

I‘m studying for a masters and have been reading on and off all morning. After a while I suddenly felt very tired and had a power nap.

Shortly after, I had lunch and my vision suddenly went weird. In one eye I could see a zig zag cirle. It progressively got worse, I could hardly see out of that eye.

It‘s now 30 minutes later and it’s more or less gone. But now I feel panicky, shaky and weak. My head feels a bit heavy, but no headache.

Does this sound like a migraine? I‘ve never had anything like this before.

Yes that sounds like a classic aura migraine.

If you've never had it before, please speak to your GP. Is there any history of it in the family? Familial links are very common.

Pdbear · 29/10/2025 12:26

No family link at all. Is this something to be worried about? I am quite stressed at the moment, but not any more than I have been in the past

Classic migraine and with Classic triggers of stress and lots of time looking at a screen.

If you are on the pill you need to see the GP as you can only have the mini pill with aura migraine.

Thanks. Luckily not on the pill, but thanks for mentioning. Never would have thought about it!

Yes that's typical. You might find that you have a couple more over the next few days. Mine tend to cluster (but then I can go for either months or sometimes a couple of years without one). They're horrible. I find a can of full fat coke and some salty chips helps. Plus cocodamol. The headache might linger for a couple of days.

They're horrible, and one of the things drs really struggle to treat unfortunately.

OrlandointheWilderness · 29/10/2025 13:01

Yep sounds like mine. Make sure you speak to your GP if you’ve never had one before.

Agree. Sounds like classic migraine with aura. The zig zag bit is always the 'uh oh - it's coming' signal for me. See your GP and get some decent meds for next time.

I had these ever since I got pregnant, and they have continued. I think mine are hormone triggered.
I'm now 2 years post partum and I still get them. I'm continuing breastfeeding so that may impact.

I get no pain either. It took me a while to realise silent migraines were a thing.

I'm due on in the next week so expect to have a few episodes over the next few days. They make working hard, as I can't read anything.

Mine are triggered by low blood sugar then eating. Also sensitivity to light and screens.
