My 2 year old keeps scratching his bum as soon as the nappy comes off

Have checked for worms but see nothing. Do you think I should take him to the doctor? He seems fine otherwise. What could it be apart from worms?

I would treat for worms, can't hurt - and might well be, whether you see them or not - but you could also dab some Canesten HC on his bum, thats what our GP told me to use when dd's bum was itching for unknown reasons. Could be a touch of thrush, in warm weather and with a nappy?

Agree with Elibean, the Caesten HC is for a fungal nappy rash. (My DD currently has it too) but I've been told by a feind who's a GP to apply a generous amount of nappy rash barrier cream to stop the dampness coming into contact with your baby's skin at every nappy change for a few days to give the Canasten HC a chance to do its thing.

I tend to use sudacrem on his bum anyway and no rash but will try the canestan and see if that helps. Easywriter, do you put canestan on and then a barrier cream on top?

Yes, it's a bit faffy but been told it's the way forward.

Easywriter · 05/06/2008 22:45

Oh! My DD doesn't have a rash that you can see either. I think it's just the terminology.

How do you mean, scratching? DS (2) tends to itch his bum cheeks and rub his willy when the nappy comes off and I think that's pretty normal - his bum has been swathed in a hot, sweaty, pissy nappy and he's getting to the age when he's aware of that. It's natural to want to have a bit of a rub when it comes off.

I think most blokes like a surreptitious scratch tbh.

Obviously if he's scratching himself raw or looks like he's in discomfort then rethink, but if he's just having a rub then I wouldn't worry.

no he really claws his bum when the nappy comes off and the air hits it. Tried canestan cream this morning so will see if that helps.
