Hip Pain

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice pls. I'm 42 and suffering from awful hip pain that seems to be getting progressively worse. It's not too bad if I keep moving but kicks in if I sit down for a rest or even worse during the night. If I lie on it, I wake up in pain, turn to the other side and it happens again. It even hurts when I sleep on my back but to lesser degree.

A few months ago I went on HRT but had to come off it because of chronic indigestion during the progesterone phase. I did notice some small improvement to joint pain and mood but perhaps I didn't realise the extent until now.

I take a vitamin D supplement because the Dr told me it was low but otherwise I don't take anything. What should I do? I'm a little worried about something sinister tbh as I do tend to worry about health but I've been to the GP several times times about the HRT and I don't want them thinking I'm a hypochondriac.

Anyone have any experience of this pls? Thanks

Go back to the GP! If you’re in this much pain, you obviously need some help.

DiscoBob · 25/10/2025 17:17

It sounds exactly like the pain I suffer from. But mine is since I broke my hip and had emergency surgery where they put metal plate and screws in my femur. The metalwork kind of digs into my skin and it hurts and crackles like popcorn when I'm tired or cold. It also hurts at night.

I'm afraid that's not much help as unless you've got that it's unlikely the same situation.

I have osteoporosis and I take vitamin D and calcium. I also take dihydrocodeine for the pain.

Could you ask the GP to refer you for a bone density scan and a CT or MRI on the hip?

It's a horrible pain and I wish you well. X

Hi I also have hip pain - in my case I think it's linked to very weak glutes . Exercise especially walking helps with the pain as well as strengthening exercises.

HansHolbein · 25/10/2025 17:24

Sounds like GTPS. I suffered with it last year, it was shit. I developed it after a fall. Doesn’t have to be caused by a fall but can also be caused by weak glutes. You need to go to the GP and get some pain relief. Naproxen helped me. Then you will need physio. You have my sympathy - hip pain is awful.

Sounds like the start of osteoarthritis.

On that assumption ….

Ask your gp to send you for an X-ray to benchmark if it is that and how advanced it is.

As time passes keep going back to gp for X-rays to see how bad it’s getting. Eventually after you’ve jumped through all the NHS hoops, physio, exercises etc you’ll be referred to a surgeon for replacement.

You are currently a bit young for surgery. If it is osteoarthritis they’ll probably make you wait ages and ages fof surgery.

Ive had joint replacements so the above is an indication of what I went through. It took years to get an NHS referral for surgery. All good now.

Keep pushing. He that shouts loudest …. gets!

Go to an osteopath. I had awful.hip pain and it turned out to be my pelvis being out of alignment, but what I learned from the osteopath is that it can be many things. She ruled them.outbone by one.

Wherearemymarbles · 25/10/2025 17:31

Where in the hip?
could be several things:
Arthritis - this would come quite slowly, ie months / years and you might feel grinding with some movement

Greater trochanteric Bursitis - inflammation of the bursa (outer part if hip) can come on suddenly, pain radiates down the outside of the leg and perhaps down to the knee. Groin pain due to associated stiffness. Pain when lying on it, eases with movement

Inflammation of the piriformis muscle can lead to similar symptoms

personally I’d ditch the middle man, ie GP and see a private physio.
The GP wont have a clue, tell to you take pain killers, come back in an month, then suggest NHS physio, you wait another couple of months just go be given some exercises you can find on google…

Sadly this just the sort of thing the NHS fails miserably at.unless you have private its very much something you have to throw money at.

Wilsonchurchtill · 25/10/2025 17:37

Either GP to refer to physio or private physio. I've just been diagnosed as having weak muscles around my hip joints and been given daily exercises to do. Early days but I'm hoping it'll work. Could be many things. I was dreading it being osteoarthritis but it isn't. Sounds similar to yours though.

DancingInTheMoonlights · 25/10/2025 17:41

Hi, I have suffered with hip pain for years and it was getting progressively worse. I think sitting sitting at a desk all day hasn’t helped in slightest. somebody on here posted a link for me for this lady who’s a physiotherapist and she said to do these exercises every day for a month. I did it and the pain went away. I keep doing it every day as I don’t want it to come back. it’s really help strengthen my hips - absolutely brilliant. Only takes 10 minutes a day I do it in the morning before work.

Night pain warrants an x-ray so do see your GP, but it’s probably osteoarthritis. Once you’ve seen GP and had appropriate imaging a good physio will help +- specialist referral of indicated.

JohnTheRevelator · 25/10/2025 17:49

Sounds like osteoarthritis, which is what I have in my right hip. I have very similar issues to you, broken sleep and unable to get comfortable for more than a few minutes. Your GP should refer you for an X ray to see what's going on.

Eyesopenwideawake · 25/10/2025 17:58

I had horrendous joint pain, especially hips, at various points during the menopause. Heavy duty painkillers worked and it disappeared after a few years (it wasn't constant).

MargaretThursday · 25/10/2025 18:15

I had hip pain like that.
GP sent me to a physio who pointed out one of my legs is about 1cm smaller. I have a riser in my shoe now and that really helps. I don't often feel the pain now.

LesLavandes · 25/10/2025 19:47

It could be anything. I have suffered from bursitis and piriformis pain. Physio and yon yoga helped sort these out bit it took a long time. I would asked to get referred for a scan of some sort to find out the cause and go from there.

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/10/2025 19:55

start with seeing a physio
it is very common do develop hip problems due to bad posture, imbalance of muscles. f not countered by physio/strength training it can develop to arthritis.

hope that's all it is.

all the best

all the best

Timemyluckchanged · 25/10/2025 19:59

My hip pain was cured by 1) taking iron supplements 210mgx2 daily as I was extremely ferritin deficient and 2) taking up yoga but the iron made the biggest difference and quickly.

BedtimeBeliever · 25/10/2025 20:04

I have GTPS as well and it sounds just like it. I got some physio exercises that are definitely helping with it!

TwoBlueFish · 25/10/2025 20:32

Does it hurt when you go up stairs as well? If it does the it sounds like bursitis. I get it every couple of years, usually get referred to physio, given exercises, told to take ibuprofen and use an ice pack. That never helps very much for me so usually end up with an injection which does the trick.

autienotnaughty · 25/10/2025 23:05

I have hip pain I’m 45 I think it’s osteoarthritis. I started with flexique cream and noticed a massive improvement
