Amitriptyline for stomach issues?

Hello

I I have been prescribed Amitriptyline due to long standing unexplained trouble with my stomach - nausea, pain and bloating that often keeps me awake at night and makes days pretty miserable.

I’ve had some tests and investigations and the only things picked up are a small hiatus hernia, slightly slow gastric emptying and slight narrowing of bowel at duodenum. I’ve tried various PPIs and anti nausea meds without much joy.

Has anyone else been prescribed Amitriptyline in this situation and has it helped? I’m willing to try anything at this point but also worried it could make me feel even worse! I also have low blood pressure, thyroid nodules and various other things going on.

Thank you (and sorry this is long!)

My son has recently started taking amitriptyline for stomach issues and it's helped massively. He does have low BP but it's not affected that really. Main side effect is he sleeps better but feels drowsy for about 12hrs after taking so has to take early evening.

Thank you @anneblythe - I’m glad it’s helping your son.
Can I ask, does the drowsiness hit straight away after taking the tablet? I have to get up at 6.30am. If I take the tablet at 6.30pm would I be able to drive during the evening? Or be fit to go out?

How drowsy you are with amitriptyline is really individual.

My friend thinks it's the best thing ever invented and has no drowsiness at all. While I had to give it up as I couldn't stay awake.

He does get a bit drowsy straight away but has low BP due to other chronic illness so it may affect him more due to that. Like pp said it can affect people differently.

Thank you all. I guess I’ll have to try it. I just can’t be incapacitated in the evenings or mornings. I have a family to look after and a job to do. I’m usually only in bed for 7 hours.

I take it for migraines and it helps me sleep but I don’t notice a drowsiness . Take it at 10pm and get up 6/7am no problem

This was a magic cure for me. Had a terrible time over about 3 months where everything just felt wrong and I felt massively full after even a tiny bit of food. Lost loads of weight, ended up extremely thin.

Amytriptylene just seemed to reset my body back to working again. I didn’t stay on it for very long as I did find the drowsiness a bit inconvenient, but it didn’t stop me doing anything and because I felt so much better I coped much better than I had when I wasn’t taking it. Really hope it works for you.
