Is this significant leg swelling?

Hi,

I have posted previously so I do apologise.

I had radiofrequency albation on Thursday (3/4 days ago.) for chronic venous insufficiency. They didn't touch any varicose veins, just the large vein causing the problem. It went from my groin to bottom of my leg. This was via the NHS.

Since then my leg hasn't really been swollen until Saturday evening. I took a photo on Saturday morning as I was so pleased with it. I then felt a bit funny with my leg so took a look and it was swollen. It has continued to swell now despite using the compression stocking as advised. And after resting it overnight.

It's especially swollen near the incision on the left of my knee (just under it) but theres no sign of infection there.

My DH says swelling is normal. But my concern is that "significant swelling" should probably be checked but I don't really know what that means. And if it is significantly swollen is it a 111 call or a wait until GP tomorrow.

I have attached a photo of my legs. I only take the compression stocking off for a second to check my leg. And for 5 minute shower today.

Bit concerned it's still getting bigger despite compression too. :/

Is this significant leg swelling?

Which leg are you worried about, your right calf looks bigger than your left and your left knee looks puffy. Any pain at all. I'd measure the circumstances of both calves, knees and thighs and give 111 a call.

I would call 111 for advice if the swelling is getting bigger with compression, OP.

I'd call for medical advice, it is swollen

TalulahJP · 19/10/2025 19:48

Yeah it does look swollen. I’d phone nhs24 for advice.

TalulahJP · 19/10/2025 21:28

Ps you could measure both legs at the widest part and the ankle so you can tell the nhs24 phone staff the difference.

If that was mine, I wouldn't think it was "significant" just a reaction to surgery.

It's definitely puffed up but not so much as it looks like something is seriously wrong. If it got bigger I would back in so keep a note of times and measurements.

I think its swollen alot and you should speak to someone

I think OP is concerned because it has swollen up suddenly since Saturday and isn't going down with elevation or compression. I would be too. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about but I would definitely want to check with a medical professional.

Thank you all so much for your opinion

@CarterBeatsTheDevil is correct. Compression etc doesn't seem to be working and it was completely normal the other day and swelled up within 2 hours and hasn't gotten any better.

I'm going to ring the GP this morning not that I'm sure they'll do anything

Yes, you need to contact your GP this morning and get them to look at it. When you press your skin, does it rebound normally, or is there a dent?
