Unexpected scan for haematoma

A few months ago I visited my GP about what I thought was a cyst that hadn’t developed a head. I’d had it for a good couple of months at that point and it kept reducing in size, then coming back up and was painful to touch.
GP said not a cyst, just a haematoma. No treatment needed, it will go away on its own. All good.

FF to yesterday, I receive a letter from hospital asking me to make an appointment for an ultrasound on the part of my body that this is in.

I’m quite confused. Is this normal procedure for a haematoma? GP didn’t mention anything about referring for a scan and didn’t have any concerns at all. In fact, I almost felt like an idiot for even seeing her about it (although she does give off that vibe in general).

The haematoma is still very visible, but I don’t currently have any pain from it. Looking back, it first came up in April. Is that a long time, or should it have gone by now?

I’m just a bit torn on whether to book the ultrasound, not wanting to waste NHS time, resources, etc for what is basically a bruise?

You've sought medical advice and as part of those investigations they want to ultrasound the area. I'd go. If it wasn't necessary they wouldn't order the test, because as you say resources are not to be wasted.

Well yes, except it was brushed off as a very minor “injury” that didn’t require further action. She did not mention any scans or further investigation and from what I can see, it’s not typical to do an ultrasound of a haematoma, so you can see my confusion. And it’s not as though you can just call your GP to enquire.

Maybe she just wanted to rule an issue out to be on the safe side but really doesn't think there is anything to worry about. I'd just go and then you've taken the belt and braces route.

All the best to you
