Hair shedding lots and sore itchy scalp!

Does anyone know of anything I can do? I’m so upset 😭 over the last few weeks my hair is shedding loads and I don’t know why. Everytime I touch my hair loads of strands are falling out. I dread brushing it or showering as it’s worse then. My scalp feels itchy and sore and looks red in some places. I don’t have thick hair - it’s really fine so it’s more noticeable and it’s really getting me down. I’ve booked an appt with the gp but that’s not for another two weeks.

Ive tried nizoral shampoo but that isn’t making it any better.

its making me so self conscious and sad :(

I really sympathise with you OP.

You have definitely done the right thing by making an appointment with your doctor.

In the meantime I think all you can do is try and eat a really healthy diet . And also avoid scratching your scalp.

There are so many different possible causes .

Thanks, I keep getting the sensation of burning/tingling scalp. It’s all stressing me which is probably making the hair shedding worse x

Thank you, it’s worth a try while I wait to see the doctor. Was she getting hair loss too?

Nizorel shampoo. Follow the beginning instructions, then once a week as maintenance.

Moo Goo shampoo as regular shampoo.

I spent a year like you, trying every shampoo under the sun before hitting the magic formula!

How long is your hair ?
I lost a lot of hair a couple of years ago after a bout of ill health , it is stressful which doesn't help your hair if you're under stress , like a never ending circle .

I notice if my hair gets too long my scalp really hurts , like it's the weight pulling on the poor scalp skin!

Mine did grow back, weirdly corrugated, so I have much wavier hair than before , but I need to keep it shulder length at most .

I got some multi-vits for menopause
Used Olaplex and Moroccan Oil every couple of weeks (Moroccan oil overnight on my scalp)

I wonder if it could be psoriasis. My friend had it and it only affected her scalp.

I found this really good for sore, itchy, flaky scalp:

Take some photos of your scalp at its worst so the GP can see this . You will hopefully get improvement between now and your appointment

  • Are you losing hair from all over or in patches?
  • Have you recently lost weight or been ill? Each time I've lost weight, my hair started to shed a few months later
  • Any deficiencies or health issues? Anaemia, Vit D deficiency, diabetes, thyroid etc?
  • Any changes in hair colour or shampoo before this started?
dancerdog · 18/10/2025 16:00

Sounds like what I had. I couldn't understand how my hair could hurt! And the amount that was falling out was terrifying.

The doctor gave me betnovate liquid for the scalp. The first time I used it, it was glorious relief from the stinging pain. Pretty sure she said it was non-specific dermatitis, which I used to get in patches. The scalp condition went away and my 63 year old hair is back to being lovely and thick.

When you get to the doc ask for blood tests, specifically iron and ferritin. That was my problem when my hair just fell out and I had such an itchy and sore scalp. I had been feeling tired and a bit dizzy, however I put it down to being busy and not getting proper meals or sleep!

Mine was so bad I had to have an iron infusion. After that, my hair grew back and I felt great.

I'm not saying this is what you have, but worth saying to the doc.

Biotin is a good supplement for hair and nails. You could start that in the meantime.

I usually use Moogoo shampoo but just find my scalp has been awful lately and not sure why x

It was breast length but recently had it cut so it’s just below shoulder length. It’s naturally fine so while it’s falling out in bits not clumps it’s still noticeable because my hair is generally so fine if I lift my hair I’ve got little bald patches everywhere :(

Thank you I’ll read up on this. It’s hard for me to know what to try when I’m not sure what exactly it is as I’m worried I’ll make it worse :(

I really hope so it’s upsetting to see so much hair loss :(

I’d say all over but because my hair is so fine generally I’ve got areas of small bald patches :(

lost a few lbs intentionally a few months ago but piled that back on now!

Health issues - I suffer with migraines but no other issues as far as I’m aware. When I had bloods done last year I was a bit deficient in vitamin D so took some tablets for that

No changes in hair colour or shampoo. I generally use MooGoo as my regular shampoo

Yes this sounds so similar to me!

great that you managed to get yours resolved how long did it take for the hair to grow back?

Thankyou, weirdly a couple of weeks ago I had a bizzare spell when I was out food shopping. Felt really dizzy in one of the aisles and had tunnel vision and felt like I could faint! Also feeling more tired than usual, I’m usually 200mph but my motivation is just gone lately! So probably worth me mentioning this when I see them just incase it’s related.

Great to hear your hair grew back well after being treated for low iron. Did it take a long time to grow back?

Also just remembered that when I was itching my scalp there was like a weird stuff that would come off it. The only way I can describe it is like grains of salt?

Yes, but she does have a lot of hair so it wasn’t overly noticeable.
i get alopecia and discovered it was due to salicylate allergy.

A few months for the hair to grow back to be honest, but I could feel the improvement in the itch quite quickly. I also had a "snow" like effect when brushing or scratching, it was unbelievable the amount of small flaky stuff that shed, like dandruff but it wasn't that since not one dandruff treatment worked. I wore very light coloured tops for a long while!

Hope you get sorted, it is very disheartening to see "snow" on your shoulders and masses of hair in the hairbrush.

dancerdog · 18/10/2025 18:23

*hugsandpugs *I realised after a few months that the hair loss was tapering off, and I was no longer backing up the drains. To be honest the main thing initially was that the painful hair/scalp went away.

Since then I also started to take a one-a -day hair, nails and skin vitamin, which I feel has helped too. My natural hair loss now looks different from the worst of it, I'm not seeing whole roots and hair just dropping off my head.

I hope you find a resolution soon.
