Is it possible that my toe is broken?

About 10 days ago i dropped a tin of dog food on my left foot. It hit the area between my little toe and the toe next to it. Overnight it came up in a huge black bruise that covered both toes and part of teh foot. 10 days on the bruise is still there, it hasn't gone yellow, it is still dark coloured and it is sore to touch.
Today, Ds2 was climbing up onto the cupboard in the kitchen (don't ask) and as he stepped down, he stepped onto the exact bit of my foot which had got hit by the tin. It has swollen up really badly, and even putting weight down on it is unbearable. I ahve been sitting with an ice pack on it, but even the slightest touch has me going through the roof as it is so painful. Surely after 10 days it should have healed

I would get a doctor to look at it. It sounds painful.

my bad foot took six weeks to heal, it wasn't broken but felt like it! you should get it checkout out if you can, do you have a walk in clinic somewhere?

taping the toes together helps alot.

I have to say that they won't do anything for a broken toe - Icing for about 15 mins every hour should bring the swelling down and tape to the next toe for stability.

Hope it feels better soon,

NotQuiteCockney · 05/06/2008 08:24

They don't do a lot for broken toes, ime. Taping is pretty much it.

But this sounds unpleasant, certainly. Are you maxdosing iboprofen? Keep it raised whenever possible, sleep with a few pillows under it (sounds trivial, but I swear to god, it helps a lot).

Get it checked out.

I broke my big toe last Sunday after an encounter with a metal post. Suspected it might be broken - bruised and swollen, pretty painful.

Called NHS direct the following day to see if it was worth checking out. They suggested I went for an x-ray and pointed me to my nearest walk-in centre with x-ray facility (to avoid A&E queues). Xray and fracture diagnosis within half an hour.

Although the only treatment is taping to neighbouring toe, ideally lots of rest with your foot up (ha ha) and ibuprofen, it's still worth having the x-ray should the fracture be in any way complicated, particularly as yours may have been re-broken by the sound of it!

' scuse the repetition of what NQC said!

NotQuiteCockney · 05/06/2008 08:37

Big toe is a different deal, by the way - it affects your gait, it needs to be right.

It does sound like saltire's toe has been rebroken, though, you're right - the one I think I rebroke set funny and still looks goofy. All the other toes I broke are fine.

WonderingWhy · 05/06/2008 08:39

My schoolfriend broke her toe and had a long plaster up to her thigh! [HMM]

WonderingWhy · 05/06/2008 08:40

caps lock!

aDad · 05/06/2008 08:41

and 10 days of pain and bruise doesn't sound right.

saltire · 05/06/2008 08:41

Well it will need to wait until after work. It is still swollen and there is a lump appeared on the bone further down. Its not on the toe itself, but if you run your finger down the toe next to the little one then there is a small bone, alump has appeared there. The little toe, the one enxt to it and the area of the foot surrounding it are swollen

Broke mine in December. Was very red, sore swollen and bruised. Not just toe, but also knuckle joint and base of second toe.
They didn't do anything because of where the break was (just in the bone, if that makes sense - dropped a drawer on it).
BUT it does depend on your particular injury. I think if it's in the joint you risk future problems with arthritis if it's not treated properly (this is the instance where they put your foot in plaster I think). And because it's the foot it can affect your whole body as a consequence.
Definitely worth getting it checked out by the pros.

Have just put on my shoes for work, and the pain is bad. They are pumps style and the front of the shoe is pressing on the bruise

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 05/06/2008 08:56

Do you have to stand at work? Can you wear more comfy shoes?

Please raise the foot as much as possible, and maxdose iboprofen (unless you're not allowed it ...).

saltire · 05/06/2008 09:46

NQC - yes I am a shop assistant. I have been taking Ibuprofen 400mg and Co-codamol for the past 2 days anyways due to a fibro flare up, so have just taken a 400 mg tab just now and will take some co-codamol at 12

It does sound like a possible double break.

Would strongly recommend you get it checked out.

I have weird icky long toes and have broken most of them more than once. I normally don't bother with A&E but any with major swelling or visible lumps/movement on the bone I do. I once had an infection in the bone and no way on this earth am I going through that again.

Get it checked, please.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/06/2008 10:34

Oh fuck, re: shop assistant. Please get it checked out asap. And sit down if at all possible? Maybe tape the toes. You've probably already gone to work ...
