Ive had constant parenthesia and allodyna for nearly 6 months and the doctors can’t tell me why. I’ve had every blood test under the sun and nerve conduction tests which are all “normal”

It’s getting to the point that I can’t wear shoes as the top of my foot feels like it’s been burned. My whole left side feels like I have lost hermetic neuralgia.

My dr has said i need to treat the symptoms now, even though they can’t find any evidence that theirs is something wrong, and he’s offered me amitriptyline. I’m wary of taking medication as I’m a complete wimp and hate the idea of side effects.

Please could you tell me your opinions on the med and what you’re taking it for etc?

thanks so much

I couldn't get past the side effects unfortunately. Felt like a zombie even on a low dose. And the dry mouth was unbearable.

Hope it works for you. We're all different.

It works for me. I'm taking it for nerve pain in my leg. I upped it to 30 mg, starting at 10mg and increasing each week. Seems to dampen things so I feel nerve sensations but not really pain as such. Another benefit of it at the start was that it helped me sleep so again helping me to cope with things when I was at my worst at the start of taking it.

thanks everyone for the advice. I’m leaning towards not taking it to be honest after all the comments. I’m not in pain as such, where it stops me from doing anything, it’s more of an annoying sensation rather than full blown pain.

I just wish I could find out what was causing it, then I could treat the root rather than mask the symptoms.

Have you looked into mcas?

I took it for recurrent UTIs and it was nothing short of miraculous. I wouldn’t rule out any treatment based on the opinions of people on the internet. I tend to take the approach of trying it and seeing if it works. If it doesn’t I stop. Other people have different approaches, though.

I take Nortriptyline instead, for migraine prevention. I was nervous of side effects of Amitriptyline too so managed to get prescribed Nortriptyline which is similar but usually has fewer or milder side effects. More expensive so NHS don't tend to prescribe it in the first instance but you could discuss it with your GP.
