Is thrush from a woman to a man contagious? I dont even know for a fact that I have thrush but I am rather um... itchy down below. When I say rather I mean extremely!

DH and I are ttc and well... its the time of the month when we need to be doing things!! So I want to but he doesnt because (fair enough) he is worried he will get itchy bits.

Do you have to see a doctor for treatment or diagnosis or is there something I can just buy to save the embarrassment? And can he get it if we do the deed?

Yes - if you have thrush then you need to get d/p treated aswell, otherwise it will keep occuring if you only treat you.

MuchLessTiredNow · 04/06/2008 22:05

yes it is - you both need to be treated. but if you go to doc's they may be able to give you something for both of you. good luck

allgonebellyup · 04/06/2008 22:06

yes - i used to give ex my thrush all the time, his knob would swell up and get all itchy, and look like an aardvark!!

WigWamBam · 04/06/2008 22:07

Yes, it can pass between partners. And if he gets it from you, he can pass it back if he's not treated too.

You can buy treatment over the counter - Diflucan One is a single dose tablet, or you can buy pessaries or creams, and dh can put Canesten cream on his penis.

If you've never had thrush before, though, you should have it diagnosed by the GP before you treat it.

ivykaty44 · 04/06/2008 22:07

d/h will not get itchy bits or any symptoms - usually, but you must treat him.

If you have oral sex you will get thrush in your mouth, so make sure he knows no nice stuff unless he uses the cream

eenybeeny · 04/06/2008 22:08

I dont think he would have it because we havent had sex for a couple of weeks and this only just started about 3 or 4 days ago. Stupid question - does it affect fertility at all? Probably not.

I really dont want to miss a month ttc just because of a stupid thing like this. I already have fertility issues it took 4 years to get pregnant with DS.

can buy canesten over the counter, inc the pill thing, not sure if men can also take the tablet, check at your local pharmacy.
you both need to be treated at same time tho.

eenybeeny · 04/06/2008 22:10

I dont think I have ever had thrush before. If I have it has not made an impact on me I guess because I cant remember it. I really dont want him to get something nasty I am just so sad at losing out on trying for a baby.

If I see the GP tomorrow and got a prescription tomorrow and it went within a day I suppose I might still be fertile... probably not though knowing me

be careful...if you've got thrush, friction can aggrivate it....and the you'll be sore AND itchy. best get it treated really.

MuchLessTiredNow · 04/06/2008 22:20

I don't think it affects conception in any other way that you may not want to have sex.

eenybeeny · 04/06/2008 22:38

if I get treatment tomorrow anyone know how quickly it will clear up? How do you contract thrush anyway??? I mean... me and DH are very faithful to each other its not a sex thing is it?

OP posts:
mellyonion · 04/06/2008 22:43

i'm sure its a bacterial thing....yeast?

no, it can just sort of develop...some people get it alot, some only once or twice, some never, some people after taking antibiotics, some have major flare ups in pregnancy, some in hot weather. its notthing to worry about...just inconvenient and uncomfortable.

re treatment, the firt applicaion of cream will ease your itching, but it needs a good few days i would have thought to go completely.

eenybeeny · 04/06/2008 22:45

oooh I just took antibiotics!!! the week before!

mellyonion · 04/06/2008 22:54

bobs your uncle then!

get me....i'm practically a doctor! ha ha ha

i just found this...www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=87&sectionId=1

SlartyBartFast · 04/06/2008 22:59

yeast, and sweet things, i think but antibiotics are a BIG cause

expatinscotland · 04/06/2008 23:01

i got pregnant with thrush after a miscarriage - antibiotics after the ERPC probably the culprit - so it doesn't affect fertility.

but yes, you both needed treated!

a mother can also pass it to her baby from her nipple. DD2 had it when she was about 6 weeks old - her wee mouth was all white - and i had to treat my boobs, too.

eenybeeny · 04/06/2008 23:11

wow mellyonion I am so impressed. I hadnt thought about the anti-biotics. I am actually still taking them the course hasnt entirely finished. I started taking them within a week before the itching appeared.

well expat its good to know I can get pregnant with it... but its a moot point. DH and I have decided to keep the infection to just me and miss this month of ttc I feel so so so sad about this. I am not coping well with my fertility issues anyway and I wait for each month very impatiently. Oh well.

WAIT

turkey baster???? shit I dont actually have one in the house! LOL ah to be concieved in love!
