Low WBC, low neutrophils, slightly low lymphocytes

Not sure what I’m hoping for posting here but have a month to wait for repeat tests so probably more of a coping mechanism…

DS (7) has had tummy aches and bowel problems for as long as we can remember. He also has near constant raised lymph nodes in neck, and frequent mouth ulcers.

He's had all the tests you can think of and everything coming back fine but most recent bloods show WBC at 3.7, neuts at 1.3 and lymphs at 1.6. I don’t know what the latter were previously but WBC is on a downward trajectory (5.6 first, then 4.3, now 3.7). He has a follow up test next month.

Does anyone have experience or insight into this? In addition to stool samples, coeliac tests etc, he’s also had scans on his neck and tummy (all okay). We did a food intolerance test in the spring and cut out wheat and cow’s milk as a result.
Thanks in advance

The mouth ulcers and gut issues scream Crohn's. Has he had investigations for this?

I’m not 100% but DH seems to think he’s been tested for it already. Will look into how reliable those tests are…

Managed to get hold of his previous results and over the past 18 months, we have:
neutrophils: 2.4, 2.4, 1.3
lymphocytes: 1.7, 2, 1.6
Not sure whether that casts any more light on the situation

Definitely check. Chronic inflammation like with Crohn's affects white blood cells counts as the body is constantly overstimulated. They won't look for it immediately as he's so young, but it took years for my brother to finally be diagnosed when he was 14. Constant mouth ulcers, stomach pain, gradual weightloss followed by rapid weightloss and fingernails that curved down around the end of his fingers were all symptoms.

I had low neutrophils etc on one blood test and it was repeated 2 weeks later and they were normal.

I was told they can lower if you’ve had a virus.

This is useful - thank you

Yes I’ve read this too. He wasn’t unwell at the time (although it could have been low lying) but I’m not sure that would account for the persistently low lymphocytes?
