Waking up funny taste in mouth and watery blood

pippapipps · 14/10/2025 23:20

I've noticed maybe over a few months that most mornings I wake up with a horrible taste in my mouth so I usually just drink some water but yesterday I went to the bathroom sink and spat and there was watery blood each time I spat.
Again this morning same thing horrible taste and watery blood.

I can't see any blood on my teeth when I've checked to see where the blood is coming from ?
Anyone else had this? I can't believe I've had this horrible morning taste in my mouth for months maybe all year and I never checked before I only drank water so I'm thinking there must always of been blood.

Could be a gum infection. Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? If it is this you can usually clear it with Corsodyl mouthwash and then prevent it happening again by flossing and making sure you brush right up to the gum line even if it hurts your gums.

Riverswims · 15/10/2025 15:13

corsodyl mouthwash should only be used for up to 2 weeks unless on dentist’s advice. and it’ll certainly give you a “funny taste in your mouth”
dentist again then GP

Thanks.. my teeth rarely bleed when I brush them..tbh I hardly ever floss because one or two teeth will bleed and I find my gums can hurt for a while afterwards
I actually have some corsydl mouthwash that I was using a while back because I was getting a lot of mouth ulcers so I'll try that twice a day for a couple of days

Why can't it be used for more than 2 weeks? I actually never use mouthwash but I do have some corsydl mouthwash that I'd been using for mouth ulcers a while back

This is all quite a long time ago.

You should be flossing every day. If your gums bleed when you floss, this is not a good sign, so keep flossing. Also use teepee brushes - they are more effective than flossing.

I’d go back to the dentist.

gamerchick · 15/10/2025 21:54

If your gums bleed when flossing you're supposed to get right on it until it stops OP. Try the brushes.

Your issue sounds dental if you're neglecting your gums.

Your breath probably smells if you're at this stage, it's worth making an appointment.

Seaoftroubles · 15/10/2025 22:21

If you don't like using floss then use teepee brushes as they are more effective. Corsodyl is only advised for 2 weeks, as it stains the teeth, however swilling your mouth out with salty water before you brush ( but after you've used the teepees) is gentle and can help healing. Then brush and don't rinse after you have finished. Also see your hygienist again.

Thanks everyone.. but why would my gums if that's what it only bleed while I'm asleep the rest of the day even after brushing is fine no blood

I will try again with the flossing..luckily I'm told my breath doesn't smell so I'm glad about that
The dentist said my brushing was very good when I saw him

The brushes I found hard to use particularly at the back of the teeth and they got stuck in between some teeth I think that's what made them bleed? Those brushes come in all colours and I just grabbed a yellow pack I still have some.. I used to use the string floss I got on much better with that.
Tbh I was scared the morning blood was coming from my throat as I often get heartburn

Your gums bleed when inflamed. Daily flossing or tepes will reduce the inflammation, don’t let bleeding put you off or the gums being tender it can take a few days for things to settle. Sounds like early gum disease or inflammation, a scale and polish will help remove build up of plaque and tarter and you can keep on top of it at home. If you don’t have one an electric toothbrush will also help. I wouldn’t advise mouthwash unless your dentist or hygienist suggests it, and as previously mentioned for no longer than two weeks, mouthwash isn’t a substitute for good brushing or flossing but can help short term with gum problems.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 15/10/2025 23:38

Could be gingivitis… explains smell and blood. Also explains painful gums when flossing… that’s a sign of gum disease!

See a dentist.

The different colours are different sizes. If yellow gets stuck you need smaller like red or pink

ScaredSceptic · 16/10/2025 01:03

I would also see your GP if I were you, and not just assume this is something to do with your gums.

The bad taste and history of heartburn suggests to me it could be reflux related.

Beekman · 16/10/2025 01:13

I get this. I brush my teeth and floss and use saltwater mouthwash but it still happens sometimes. My dentist said it could be to do with perimenopause, women’s gums recede during this time, but also sleeping with my mouth open, which I know I do sometimes when I am deeply gone. My teeth are fine and gums healthy.
