What was wrong with me

Hi
I have posted on here before.
For some time now I have had feelings as though I am aware of my heartbeat and sometimes it feels as though my heart is beating fast.
I also get moments where I feel hot and then cold, I also feel tired alot and sometimes get headaches.
Last night I was in bed it was around 1.30am when I started to have a real weird sensation coming over me.
The only way I can describe it is that it felt as though there was alot of presure building up in my body and I then got what seemed like muscles weakness and tingling going through my arms and legs. I tried to lift my one arm but it felt weak.
I admit I started to panic as I have never experienced anything like this before I honeslty didn,t know what would happen.
Anyway I phoned an ambulance the paramedics came and checked everything, blood sugar, blood pressure, pulse, they also did an ecg and everything was normal.
What on earth was this then thye did say I could go into hosptital in case it happend again.
I decided to remain at home and even though I still felt strange I did manage to get some sleep.
All day today I have felt a bit odd and I have felt these feelings lurking in the background but they haven,t developed into what they did last night.
I do have a underactive thyroid and I know that can cause all kinds of things.
I am currently awaiting the results of a latest check on my tsh.
I had been to see my doctor about my hot and cold feelings and feeling my heartbeat and she said my thyroid maybe overstimulated on the dose of thyroxine I am on so it may need adjusting.
Has anybody any ideas on what is wrong with me it really frightened me.
I am sitting here now and I can feel these weird sensations occasionally.

If you are having problems with your thyroid and trying to find the right dosage then it sounds as if you need to get that sorted first.

The first thing that struck me, was anxiety. It sounds like a mild panic attack. or you are hyperventilating. If you google both of those you'll find loads of info.

Can I ask your age?

You could well be suffering from anxiety without knowing it.

What is your tsh?

lostittoday · 04/06/2008 20:57

Hi
I am 37 years of age so no spring chicken.
I have felt stressed of late but thats me I do get stressed easily.
My tsh on the last check was 19 so well out of range.

lost, sorry to hear you are still suffering.

Do you remeber I said I had the heart beat thing going on as well? Its almost gone...I am aware of it sometimes.

I think its stress related in my case, could that be the case with you? The more you worry about it, the worse it gets?

girlnextdoor · 04/06/2008 20:59

Sorry- I meant what IS a tsh? Is it thyroid something hormone?

You ARE a spring chicken my dear- add on another 15+ years and you'll be as old as me and I don't consider myself old at all!

If you DO get stressed easily i bet you it's anxiety and panic attacks. Look them up! You have all the signs.

CaptainCaveman · 04/06/2008 21:05

Hi lostittoday, what you are describing sounds very much like anxiety and panic - very scary if you've not had it before (and scary too if you have!). Good news is it is very easily controlled and treated with things like relaxation etc.
I've also had meds for mine in the past which allow me to carry on life without panic attacks.
I got a great cd about panic attacks from a webiste called uncommon knowledge - will try to find you a link.
Hope you are feeling ok this evening?

CaptainCaveman · 04/06/2008 21:08

here There's a few pages all about how and why we panic - quite reassuring I found.

OrmIrian · 04/06/2008 21:10

I agree that it sounds like panic attacks. And the worst thing about them is they are self-feeding - it feels so awful that you panic even more.

Sawyer64 · 04/06/2008 21:14

You have already mentioned this but the Thyroid Gland when underactive or overactive can cause a great many symptoms, especially Palpitations, and being sensitive to temperature changes,Fast and slow Pulse rates etc.
TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone.
A friend of mine was prescribed a few different drugs whilst her Thyroid was Overactive for her heart,as it caused irregular and fast heartrates. She went on to have an operation, which helped.

So it could be Panic attacks,or to do with your Thyroid.Either way,I'm sure once they sort out the correct dose of Thyroxine for you, you'll feel better, which will also help the anxiety.

lostittoday · 04/06/2008 21:18

Hi
maidamess yes I remember you, glad your feeling better.
Maybe it was stress, I have been easily stressed for years though and I have never had anything like this.

I was worried I was going to have a stroke as my mouth and throat felt odd as well its so difficult to explain.
I am still feeling odd with feelings of weakness, especially in my arms.
Last night when the symptoms were really bad I felt as though I was going to drop as if my legs would give way.
It felt like a dragging down feeling in all of my body.
Do you really think it was anxiety a panic attack.

Click on that link lostittoday - you'll see a list of common feelings associated with panic attacks eg. feeling like you might choke, or have a stroke....

cocolepew · 04/06/2008 21:22

If your thyroid is being over stimulated you be can be experiencing the sympyons of an over active thyroid. When I had this I had sensations very like what you described, palpatations, tingling/pins and needles, shaking. These happened especially when in bed. Hopefully your thyroxine level will be sorted and these stop. They do feel very like panic attacks.
HTH.

CaptainCaveman · 04/06/2008 21:22

Try here for a more direct link to explaining panic.

lostittoday · 04/06/2008 21:27

Thanks everyone for your help and thank you for the links.
I should get my tsh results soon so maybe that will shed some light on it.

It did sound like a panic attack which can affect you completely physically, and then exhaust you afterwards.

mellyonion · 04/06/2008 22:08

sounds just like when i get panic attacks...they can be really debilitating.

i have learned to recognise the early signs now and can mostly calm myself down and ward one off...

mine initially started when i stared taking a new medication....its worth mentioning to your gp, just in case..

hope you're ok.
