Alternatives to Nystatin for oral thrush

Hi all,

Many years ago I had some tolerable pastilles to such to help with oral thrush. Now there is only Nystatin which I can't cope with as it makes me retch before I spit it out. There's no way I could swallow it.

Has anyone dealt with oral thrush with just flucanazole?

For info I've been riddled with vaginal thrush for years but this is only my second oral thrush since I was at Uni. Thank you!

Salt water rinse - twice per day - generally helps keep it at bay.

i think you can still get lozenges. I hate Nystatin, it’s full of sugar and really bad for teeth.

@Dearg thanks so much! I didn't realise the pastilles were still available.

Nystatin tasted like some kind of evil potion, I have no idea how people can use it! I didn't notice the sugar 😃

@pippapipps im absolutely riddled with it, so very high chance it's in my oesophagus too!

How did you know it had spread that far? What made them send you for the gastroscopy?

Fluconazole 50mg/day for 7 days (capsule that you swallow whole).

Fluconazole 50mg/day for 7 days (capsule that you swallow whole).

That's what I've gone for. Plus may also try the salt water as per pp above.

Amazon will sell you unlimited numbers of them, not like Boots who look at you like a drug dealer if you ask for a second Flucanazole as a back up!

I have it so regularly vaginally that I've always got a couple of clomitrazoles in my makeup bag and always for holidays as I inevitably get thrush on day two.

So I'll throw the book at it this week and then maybe drop to a maintenance dose.

God knows what this does to the gut biome 🙄

I've always suffered with digestive issues stomach pains, heartburn etc to warrant a gastroscopy
For a couple of years before my first gastroscopy I started getting a bad taste in my mouth at times, my voice would go a bit hoarse sometimes, I had a lot of heartburn and then one day I noticed whitish areas in back of my throat and mouth.

The doctor said I had oral thrush and gave me nystatin which cleared up my mouth then a few months later I noticed it in my mouth again unbeknown to me it kept reoccurring because the thrush had spread to my osaphagus. but the doctor kept giving me nystatin not knowing of course that it was in my oesophagus.

After a few years I eventually got the gastroscopy and was told I had severe candida in the oesophagus I was given a course of the tablets think it was a 10 days course and that cleared it up.

That's amazing. So glad it got sorted for you.

I'm always coughing, GP told me to take omeprazole but that was awful and took months to get over the rebound. I'm also often hoarse, tight cough etc and I'm asthmatic so you'd have thought they might have checked for thrush first...

I'll see what happens with a week of flucanazole then!
