Very worried

Just been to see my D Dad. Haven’t seen him for a couple of weeks but I could see straight away that he’s not well. Has numerous ongoing conditions including prostate cancer, COPD and heart issues but this latest thing is very worrying.

He cant eat. The idea of food makes him nauseous and he’s barely keeping down a very tiny amount of food a day. He had a endoscopy a few months ago which found an ulcer. Had treatment for that bit now it’s worse than ever. Saw him today and he’s lost a lot of weight.

Ive badgered him to go back to the GP who is generally pretty good. What could be going on now?? The last time I felt this worried about him, he had sepsis. I just know he’s not ok.

I know there can’t possibly be any sort of diagnosis on here but I just wanted to get it out there…

Jesus. They’re such a worry aren’t they?!

I'd get a ambulance for not eating if continuing xx he will get weak quick

You need to call 111 at the minimum and ask their advise, he may have a blockage which is causing issues or even just not feeling like eating is a cause for concern.

Can you call a dr to visit him at home tomorrow and make sure you are there to advocate for him?

Trust your gut and take him to A&e

madameimadam · 12/10/2025 22:54

Thank you all. Yeah, we’ll get him seen quickly. This has been going on for a few weeks now. But I’m shocked at how little he’s managing to eat. No wonder he feels so crappy! He’s barely keeping anything down.

At his age hes likely dehydrated and might need a drip for fluids

I'm not saying this to frighten you. My dad had prostate cancer and heart failure. He started to basically be sick each time he ate and lost a lot of weight. He refused tests as we think he thought he had some other form of cancer. Then , he had a bad fall, likely caused by dehydration etc, after the operation to fix his fractured hip, he went into post operative delirium and didn't recover, that was at tbe end of April, he died 2 weeks ago.
It may be something easily treatable or at least something they can do so that he's comfortable and not stuck in a cycle of not being able to eat x

Similar to my dad. Who died two weeks ago . They will probably give him nutritional drinks ( which my dad hated). He can be assessed by adult services to have someone to come in and help him with medication, offering food drinks etc . Personal care and laundry cleaning etc.
or if you/ they don’t feel he’s safe at night they might suggest a care home or nursing home or independent living in a place that has staff in site.

the cost will depend on his personal wealth .

he should be eligible for attendance allowance to help pay towards help this is non means tested . Plus obviously state pension.

my dad lived until 98 his long life is down to being sociable walking and eating well. When that all started to decline in July August that was when he was in danger.

so much help out there. Age uk is marvellous so are macmillan Marie curie etc .

sending you hugs and love . Do not be afraid to ask questions. It’s hard work but worth it
