Naproxen

I am waiting for a hip replacement (hoping not to die of old age) and had been taking naproxen at least twice a day.

A GP I saw a few weeks ago was concerned about this as I also take carbocisteine (both can damage stomach). So I have dropped the naproxen (though both had been prescribed by another GP at the surgery.)

But oh the agony! I can’t walk at all, honestly I could cry with pain. My groin, outer hip, upper leg & buttock are just screaming at me. I have given up & am just on the sofa for the rest of the day.

Is naproxen really that bad? So dangerous? Has anyone here actually ever had any stomach issues with it?

I’m prescribed it for a first migraine treatment with a triptan if the Naproxen doesn’t work. I was prescribed omeprazole to take before to avoid stomach issues. Did you not get prescribed anything with it?

Londontown12 · 11/10/2025 15:26

They are safe as long as your taking stomach protector before u take ! I have arthritis and use them when pain is bad ! X

Boutonnière · 11/10/2025 15:28

I’ve had it twice, makes me feel nauseous- both times the prescription included omeprazole so the issues must be more than theoretical or more than affecting a minority.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 11/10/2025 15:38

The naproxen I was prescribed also had Esomeprazole built in.

MumChp · 11/10/2025 15:44

Talk to your doctor. Don't skip treatment.

FlowersFawb · 11/10/2025 15:47

I take narproxen you need ozempranole with it.

DoOneBetty · 11/10/2025 15:52

Dh was prescribed Lansoprazole 30mg once a day for his 500mg Naproxen which was twice a day for sciatica. Obviously given to protect the stomach.

Not sure what would be contraindicated for your Carbocisteine but I would be asking a pharmacist for advice mainly because you can see one of those very easily. Don't stop taking the meds you are prescribed, the other GP must have considered your Carbocisteine when prescribing the Naproxen in the first place.

doreuol · 11/10/2025 15:55

Gp should prescribe Omeprasole cover with any anti inflammatory. You need naproxen!!

bloodredfeaturewall · 11/10/2025 16:54

call the number of the package leaflet or call the consultant who prescribed.

naproxen is a poweful medicine but can have severe side effects or interact with other medicines.

Showerflowers · 11/10/2025 16:56

i take it with omeprazole and have done for years with no problem x

Octavia64 · 11/10/2025 17:00

You need omeprazole

FutureMarchionessOfVidal · 11/10/2025 17:22

Thank you! There is some reason apparently why with my medical history I can’t take omeprazole etc though I can no longer remember what it is! Cholesterol? Thyroid? Pancreatitis? So many discussions I have lost sight of them!

I will ask again. Meanwhile have taken naproxen anyway and such relief! I can actually walk around!

I dont think you have to take omneprazole with naproxen unless the naproxen is upsetting your stomach.
I dont take omneprazole because naproxen doesn't give me indigestion or nausea - but I do always take it after food

StopEatingTheBiscuits · 11/10/2025 17:58

I had terrible pelvic pain and got given a voltarol suppository. I wish someone had given me these 20 years ago! If you can manage pills up your bum I would highly recommend them - no worries about impact on your stomach!

that's a common misconception. You can still develop upper GI bleeding after taking an NSAID rectally.

RaraRachael · 11/10/2025 18:38

I take 2 Naproxen daily for arthritis knee pain along with Omeprazole.
Never had any issues.

Carolynpig · 11/10/2025 18:52

You can ask for gastro resistant naproxen which are easier on the stomach, I take these for arthritis

ApolloandDaphne · 11/10/2025 18:56

I've been taking naproxen for years and rarely take the omneprazole as it doesn't seem to bother my tummy.

Superscientist · 11/10/2025 19:09

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen come with a risk of stomach damage.

I think it's less that naproxen is a problem and more that two medications that can cause stomach issues that's the problem. I would absolutely be going back and asking for an alternative for either of the two medications that can damage your stomach. They shouldn't have just told you to stop a medication that you were being prescribed for a obvious reason without offering an alternative or investigating if there is an alternative to omperazole that you can take to help protect your stomach.

Emma8888 · 11/10/2025 19:18

Threw up blood on naproxen but clearly that’s not super common.

JollyGreenSnake · 11/10/2025 19:19

Stomach issues are one potential side effect. Naproxen can also cause abnormal liver blood tests and can cause kidney damage.

My gp was very careful to explain that I must take omeprazole with naproxen and not to take it long term.

DoubleDoubleDown · 11/10/2025 19:39

Oh wow, this thread has shocked me a little. Naproxen is readily available to buy OTC where I live. I take it for everyday pain relief. Headache, period pains etc. I didn't know it could cause such issues.

honeyfox · 11/10/2025 20:38

It's well known as not being great for the stomach long term.

I actually saw it in a chemist on the continent yesterday, out on the shelves and not even behind the counter.

It used to be available OTC in the UK, Feminax Ultra was naproxen. Stopped being available a few years ago. Been on holiday in the US and both Naproxen and Omeprazole are available OTC.
