Mirena if I've never dilated/laboured - and also hormone side effects?

amazonianwoman · 04/06/2008 14:38

I had a crash section with DD and an emergency section with DS after just very early stage of labour, so didn't dilate at all either time.

Every smear I've ever had has been painful cos my cervix is high up/odd position/very closed/etc etc - the nurse has always had to have a couple of goes at least, and usually comes up sweating & cursing

So will a Mirena be v painful to fit? Was thinking of going to the Family Planning clinic cos they should be more experienced?

And does anyone have side effects due to the progesterone? I still get mildish acne (I'm almost 42) and put on weight v easily (I'm already overweight)

Or are there other more appropriate contraception options for an oldie? Don't want to go down the vasectomy/sterilisation route just yet...

I had my first one put in before I was ever pregnant, and it was fine. Def go to an FPC as they'll be much better at doing it.

I've had no side effects from them, and I know several other people in rl who get on well with them too.

Thanks

Anyone else?

Mirena sounds a great idea. Family Planning or ask for a gynaecologist to do. I've only had a section and mine went in just fine.

mylittlepudding · 04/06/2008 23:44

Ooh, and, over 40 it can stay in til you go through menopause, normal 5 yr rule does not apply.

solo · 05/06/2008 00:40

My best friend has it put in under anesthetic. She's never even been pg and has her teeth drilled and extracted without anesthetic, so isn't a wimp at all. I think they have trouble getting it in without, so I know that they can do this if necessary

amazonianwoman · 05/06/2008 10:51

Excellent

Solo - your friend sounds "well 'ard" - was it local anaesthetic?

OP posts:
solo · 05/06/2008 12:21

Not sure. I thought it was general. I know one time the person fitting it for her ignored what she was telling them and there were HUGE repercussions and problems...back to being anesthetised...must check this spelling!
Yeah, she is well ard! though a total 'lady'...just doesn't see the point in messing around unnecessarily, would rather get it done if possible straight away. She's a great mate to me, though very much a ' black and white, no grey bits' kinda gal!!

I have had 2 mirena coils ,1 prior pregnancy which I had for 5 yrs , best thing ever .no periods and no pain. Then had it taken out and got pregnant . 6 weeks post -natal I had 2nd one put in . The 1st one hurt a lot and I remember it hurt to walk . The 2nd one was not as a painful . I did have some dilating in labour but had c-section so did not fully dilate .I would deffinitly go to fpc .

MuthaHubbard · 05/06/2008 19:42

I have had two natural births and my cervix is very high up/far back, which I have to point out at every smear test to the nurse.

Am actually having a smear done on monday and if all is well (apparantly they do one as standard to make sure there's no infections prior to fitting), will be having a mirena coil fitted very soon.

Memoo · 05/06/2008 20:00

a word of caution. I had a mirena fitted three and half years ago after two normal pregnancys. About 6 months after having it fitted I found out I was pregnant, to cut a very long story short two weeks after finding out i was pregnant I collasped at home, luckly BF was with me and i was rushed to hospital. I went straight into theatre for emergency op. It turns out that the pregnancy had been ectopic and it had ruptured, I have massive internal bleeding and basically nearly died as well as losing my left fallopian tube. It was without doubt the worst time of my life and there is not a day that goes by when i don't think of my little lost baby.

After all this the consultant told me that if you do get pregnant with the mirena fitted there is a higher chance that it will be ectopic. Fortunately I have had my children but we have ttc without success probably because of the damaged caused.

My friend was considering having a mirena fitted and went to see a consultant at the same hospital I had been in. He told her that he had no knowledge of anyone getting pregnant whilst using the mirena and that it was safer than female steralisation! I'm not sure if they just dismiss the cases that go wrong or if he was just very ill informed.

I don't mean to scare you but please please pleas ebe careful

Memoo...sorry to hear that for you, but glad you are ok.x

asteamedpoater · 05/06/2008 20:24

I think the mirena coil is fine for most women, but my sister had one fitted after having her children and got some very scary symptoms afterwards... She started having episodes when she lost the use and sensation of one side of her body, appalling headaches and visual disturbances. She was terrified she was having mini-strokes, but scans showed that this wasn't the case, she was in fact having extremely severe migraines, caused by the hormones in the coil. This all stopped when she had the coil removed. So my advice would be probably to avoid it if you are prone to severe headaches or migraines!!!

girlnextdoor · 05/06/2008 21:30

Quite a few women have general anaesthetic if they have the Mirena. I had an ordinary IUD and it was very painful even though I had very easy births- though this was 10 or more years after the births.

recently, a gynae was offering me the Mirena as part of HRT- the progresterone part of it- and he said he would give me a GA due to pian I had on fitting of ordinary IUD.

VanillaPumpkin · 05/06/2008 21:43

Is Mirena the one with progesterone in it? I am considering the implant which is progesterone only and so my doc has put me on Cerazette (progesterone only pill) to check that the hormones will suit me. You could perhaps try that first.
I have to say it is great for me. I was on Microgynon 30 before and it is only now I realise the side effects that had. I feel so much better on Cerazette I might just stick with it. And no periods .

liath · 05/06/2008 21:49

Definitely go to family planning. I've had two vaginal deliveries and assumed you could drive bus up there but my GP still failed miserably to put in a mirena yesterday and I'm going to have to go to family planning.

blousy · 05/06/2008 21:56

Don't want to deter you, but when I had the mirena, my skin was awful. Had it removed about 7 months ago and haven't had a spot since. Also put on weight with it, having been a skinny minnie all my life. Lost it within a month of having coil out.

May just be me though!

solo · 05/06/2008 22:47

No, not just you...I've had loads of probs with it too...this is the first thread about the Mirena where I've not been the only one slating it. Thought it was me. Still have it in, but not exactly happy with it.

amazonianwoman · 05/06/2008 23:46

Memoo - sounds horrid

I am quite concerned about the effect of progesterone on my skin/weight (as well as the insertion pain of course!) I was on a high progesterone pill years & years ago which was a nightmare for my skin, and I can't afford to put on any more weight. I'm not prone to headaches, but couldn't bear the humiliation of even worse acne A friend who had a progesterone implant started suffering from hair loss too.

Oh b*ocks, why is nothing straightforward?! Might just stick with abstinence

If you have an experienced fitter it should only hurt a little bit (I had one fitted before I'd ever been preg).

Also re side effects, main thing I experienced was weight gain. But some women don't get that. Might be a metabolism thing - I have a slow metab (for info slow metabolism doesn't mean you're necessarily fat).

SecretSquirrelandMoroccoMole · 05/06/2008 23:52

Oh - and having had a baby I would def go for another Mirena...soon as my bits sort themselves out post birth!

SecretSquirrelandMoroccoMole · 05/06/2008 23:52

D'oh! Meant to say another coil - not Mirena as I've just shaken much of the baby weight and don't fancy putting more on again!

SecretSquirrelandMoroccoMole · 05/06/2008 23:53

Too many posts from me. I'm not stalking your thread, honest. I shall go quietly now.
