Thyroid confusion!

Wondering if anybody could provide some help/input?

I am hypothyroid and have been on thyroxine for 4 years, always on 87.5mcg. In July I had my yearly thyroid test - TSH came back as 4.8 - GP asked if I’d felt tired, which I had along with sluggish digestion etc, so I went from 87.5mcg to 100mcg. Within 4 weeks I felt jittery and felt like I was over medicated so I went back to my old dose of 87.5, so was only on 100mcg for 4 weeks. Below are the recent results

24 July - TSH - 4.8
1 Sept - TSH - 2.62
30 Sept - TSH - 1.98
30 Sept - T4 - 14.5

It’s now been a month I have been back on my old dose and I still don’t feel right - I still feel like I am still having more hyperthyroid/ overmedicated symptoms? In this timeframe I have also had a viral infection that I have had to take steroids for for a week so don’t know if this has impacted things? I also am likely in perimenopause and might be starting HRT soon. Am I just being impatient and need to wait to balance back to my old dose? Any thoughts/input very welcome!

It’s normal to feel a bit confused and rubbish when your thyroid meds change, especially with those symptoms you mentioned. When you bumped your dose from 87.5 to 100, feeling jittery and like you were overdoing it sounds like you might have had a bit too much thyroid hormone. Going back to the original dose was a good call if you felt better.
Your TSH dropping from 4.8 down to just under 2 is a good sign that your thyroid is responding. It usually takes at least 6 to 8 weeks for your body to fully settle after any dose change or going back to an old dose. The viral infection and steroids could also mess with how you’re feeling and how your hormones work, so that might be part of the story too.
Perimenopause and starting HRT can make things more confusing because hormones all mix together and can affect your symptoms and thyroid levels.
So try to give it a bit more time on your usual dose and keep chatting with your GP or thyroid specialist. If things still feel off after a few months or get worse, they might need to look at your dose again or check if something else is going on.
It’s a good idea to keep a note of how you’re feeling day to day and share that with your doctor. And if you feel super anxious or jittery even when your blood tests look okay, definitely tell your doctor as they can help with that too.
You’re doing everything right by being careful with your meds and checking in with your doc. It just takes time to get things balanced properly.

Thank you so much for replying - your post is really reassuring. Yes, I think I’ll be a bit more patient and give things time to balance out - there have been a few things at play so need a few more weeks for things to settle 🤞

Glad it helped a bit, yes, it's hard to be patient when it comes to health. I understand, but I hope things will pick up for you soon. Hang in there 😄
