Root Canal this afternoon!

Hi everyone

I am due to have a root canal this afternoon on the second molar from the back at the top and I am a bit worried about it.

I had terrible pain from it all last week and so my dentist took out the old filling and replaced it with a temporary filling. The pain has gradually subsided and now I am wondering whether I need the root canal at all - it may just be cowardice though as I am worried to death!

Please reassure me that it will be okay. I have a 2 hour appointment - yikes!!

I had a root canal about a year ago. I had heard stories of excrutiating pain when they rip out the nerve. In fact, it was like any other filling. I didn't feel anything. I was very happy about that as you can imagine. Apparently ity just depends if the nerve has died. If the nerve is dead you won't feel it.

I had one a couple of years ago, it was fine. The worst part was having to keep my mouth open for so long, but it was uncomfortable rather than painful. It did ache a bit in my jaw for a few days afterwards but over the counter painkillers sorted that.

It has been no problem ever since and I now have no fear of dental procedures having survived the dreaded root canal

Thanks for your positive message. My worry is probably related to the fact that I have a 2 hour appointment. I don't think I can keep my mouth open that long.

You will be fine figroll. I had it done recently and am the worst coward with pain, dentists etc but it was COMPLETELY painless and I'm glad it was done. It was almost relaxing!
Let us know how you get on.

Ah, thank you. I am trying to keep busy with ironing and washing to stop myself thinking about it.

It's uncomfortable, just because you have to keep your mouth open for so long, but it really isn't painful - I actually drifted off into a state of zen-like calm when I had one done last year. You'll be fine .

it'll be fine - you've had the worst bit done - honest ! good luck

Thanks all of you - you are making me feeling better already. And my dentist is so lovely too - she is very caring and kind.

I took my MP3 player to listen to and found it a great distraction. God luck this afternoon, you will be fine.

how was it figroll ? ok I hope

figroll · 04/06/2008 18:19

Thanks for your concern! It was 2 hours long but it was fine - no pain, just a bit uncomfortable.

I wouldn't want one every week, but apart from still being ultra numb, I have survived!!
