mmr and going on holiday

hi, my ds is getting his mmr today, he is actually overdue it as he has had colds or been unwell when he was supposed to get it before. I've also cancelled a couple of appointments because i've been worried about getting it done. The problem is that we're going on holiday to Spain next Tuesday and i'm worried that he'll have some adverse side effects to the vaccine while we're away. I spoke to the HV and she said that side effects can occur up to ten days after immunisation. This is my fault i know for putting it off but just hoping for some good stories about the mmr and after effects. The stories about autism terrify me also, he is such a great little boy and i'm so scared that it could all change after the mmr. My 4yo DD had the mmr and she has had no problems but i still worry. I'm a very anxious person at the best of times so this is really getting me stressed out.

I would appreciate any positive stories to allay my fears. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Tracey.

My dds both had the mmr without any problems. Just take some calpol on holiday with you in case he gets a temperature.

I personally wouldn't worry about the autism side of things but if he does have it today you should be prepared for him being a bit off colour whilst on holiday.

SOme children react more strongly than others,my ds was quite ill after the mmr.

izzybiz · 04/06/2008 09:23

Both of mine had no ill effects at all.

thanks for the quick responses,

he had high temperature, listless, measles rash,dr said mild form of measles from the jab.

also had swollen glands and fever but at different time

he has asthma which got worse at the same time

so all in all not a happy bunny for about 1o days if i remember correctly.

his was not the norm though

My ds had his mmr plus the new jab (streptococal whatever) about 5 days before we went on holiday to Brazil. I was really worried but he had no side effects at all. Enjoy your holiday.

GGirl - my son had exactly the same reaction, he got measles. But not astma. In the end he was ill for weeks, spiking temperatures, in the end i had to take him to a homeopath to get anti doted, he never had the second booster, infact he has had no other vaccines. I now have a four week old and we are dreading the whole vaccine thing, we are seeing a pead when he is 8 weeks to discuss them, DS1 also got a auto-immune thing at 7 years old and now has to have a eppi pen as we dont know what set of the reaction in order to cause the illness, it took him six months to recover and he had swollen joints and could not walk.

Personally I would not give the MMR before going on holiday, if your child reacts you will have a crap time.

Also my DS1 had constant ear infections due to his first jabs and he had only been well for about a week or so when we gave him the MMR and I believe his system was not able to deal with the vaccine due to illness. Also you should boost your child with vitamin A and C for a couple of weeks before the MMR or any vaccine as this will lessent the reation.

Oh you said - positive- sorry -

Beeper - how's your kids guts?

(Just thinking of the ear infections etc). A good book to read is Natasha Campbell McBride (a doctor) Gut and Psychology Syndrome. It talks about autism etc most but is also very relevant for allergies and autoimmune conditions - she has a sensible approach to vaccination that might help you with ds2.

I'd also recommend Richard Halvorsen's book.

Your family history sounds quite similar to ours. Did you give antibs for the repeated ear infections? I did with ds1, didn't with ds3.

Another good thing to view is a video by Derrick MacFabe (another doctor- also researcher). Type his name plus canada into google and you get a video lecture. HIs work fits in neatly with Natasha Campbell McBride's book.

yeah started on the anti-biotics but found out that DS1 is allergic to penicillin. We got to the point where we stopped giving it and treated them with junior nurofen and rest and hot water bottles. most ear infections are not bacterial. We hardly ever do anti bs. Hopefully going to dr havolsens for some jabs (if we do them)

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 04/06/2008 11:51

Halvorsen will advise which ones to give etc - right from the beginning. I'd trust his advice.

Good that you're not giving antibs.

Beeper · 04/06/2008 14:52

Getbackinyours....do you vaccinate?

The main thing I am concerned about is whooping cough...my DS1 is home-edded and the baby will not be goig to child care or toddler groups. Do you reccomend delaying the early jabs till six months or a year.

TBH the whole jabs thing has made me not want anymore children...I cant go through this again....its ruining my life.

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 04/06/2008 15:02

I don't recommend anything as our decisions were based on a reading of the literature and relating it to our particular family history.

DS1 is severely autistic. He was vaccinated.

DS2 and ds3 have to date, had nothing (ds2 is 6, ds3, 3). DS3 has the same pre-existing conditions that seem to go with autism as ds1 but he hasn't had the environmental factors ds1 had (gluten, antibs, vaccines).

Halvorsen can talk you through all the individual jabs.

There is a new strain of whooping cough about that isn't protected against by the vaccine. DS2 almost certainly had it aged 2- he was fine. He was exposed to whooping cough when he was 3 months old - I was a little concerned, but he didn't get it.

My main fear is tetanus. But I can't locate a single jab that can be given before age 10, and there's no way they're being given the 5 in 1.
