My baby won't eat much after 1st set of jabs

DD1 had her first set of jabs yesterday and hasn't been interested ever since. Have used both breast and bottle to no avail. No other issues tho (aside from being grumpy); temperature fine. Is this normal? How long will this last?

wonderingmum - just coming on here to ask qn about my DS who had his first set today. Is it okay if I hijack / join in here with my qns as well?

On your qn though - my DS has been a bit off his food, at least he has eaten, but little and often - 5-10 mins max every hour-90 mins rather than 20 mins every 3 hours.

My qn - he will only settle for his sleep for 45 mins or so then it seems when he comes into light sleep he squeals and wakes and is wide eyed. A bit of food and pat on the back and he "dozes off" - however his eyes are slightly open rather than closed so he has the appearance of a zombie. Is this a normal reaction? I gave him a dose of calpol after he woke squealing as he sounded in pain so was wondering if this is an effect of the calpol.

They often feel a bit out of sorts after these jabs and usually get back to normal after around 3 days IME. Give calpol and ensure they don't get dehydrated. If no better tomorrow go to see GP or practice nurse to put your mind at rest. That's what I would do...

How are the babies today? I hope they are both feeling better.
I can't believe I'm the only responder to your post!

Thanks for checking in, solo

My DS seems better today. Did the weird zombie dozing thing until 11 when he woke up fully, grinned manically, fed and fed and fed, and then slept until 5am He's spent this morning alternating between feeding and snoozing, but definitely seems much better in himself than last night!

Wonderingmum - how is your DD doing today?

Swaliswan · 04/06/2008 11:31

My DD used to be affected by her jabs for 5 days which made the HV a bit but it never did her any harm. I learnt that you have to go with whatever your LO wants for a few days. DD seemed to respond well to calpol even if she didn't have a temperature and the nurse explained that they get a really bad headache from one of the jabs. If you are worried, you could express some milk to ease your boobs and ensure that your supply doesn't drop but I never found this necessary.

Hi! DD is a bit better today but still not herself and still not really eating. Went to dr. this morning to find out about dehydration which was informative - now I know what to look for. And mostly she said that some babies take longer to get over jabs than others so just go with it and a few days of not eating weren't going to harm her. Biggest concern now is that her lack of appetite is going to make supply decrease - out with the pump!

Sorry to hear this. My DS was meant to have his this week but had a cold so I'll be doing all this next week.
What are the signs of dehydration?

wonderingmum · 04/06/2008 20:38

Signs that they're not dehydrated are: bright, shiny eyes (that means there's water there), tears, saliva/moist lips and tongue, warm, clammy hands, and of course fontenel flat. The fontenel has to be really, really depressed to show that they're dehydrated apparently. Good luck next week. Apparently most people sail right through them - hope DS does!

Dry nappies are a good thing to check for a dehydrated baby, though my Dd seems to have fairly dry nappies more than very wet ones. She is due the MMR soon...

Glad your babies are a bit better though
