Cystoscopy, ureter dilatation & stent insertion….

Hi
So i underwent the above surgery on Tuesday under GA. As far as i was told all went well by ureter was “very tight” this is due to a blood vessel crossing over it….. this surgery was just to confirm this & to give some relief whilst we review longer term surgical options etc.

Anyway, i was told it was straight forward little discomfort for a day or 2 and slight blood in urine…… hmmm! Woke up on the ward just as they said and high as a kite, keen to get home. Within an hour i was throwing up, intense pain, clammy & the blood in my urine was massive amounts. Anyway they kept me an extra hour and half on the ward then packed me off. No pain relief just the offer of a 2 week sicknote & told to take paracetamol & ibuprofen.

i ended up at urgent care yesterday due the pain, bleeding & again being sick, clammy, shivvery & very slight temp. They run bloods and left me waiting in agony for 5 hours before packing me off with low dose cocodamol & informing me that whilst im showing signs of infection & my infection markers on my bloods are up im not losing any clots of blood in my urine so basically crack on.

things haven’t got any better & i don’t want to go back up to the urgent care after yesterdays treatment. I’ve managed to get some strong painkillers off my gp today over the phone so i can get more comfortable but without them i literally cannot stand up with the pain. Pain when passing urine is another level and its not just the stingy burning feeling its full on kidney & bladder pain the bleeding i can’t actually tell if its clotting because the urine is such a deep bright red and feels different when passing (sorry tmi) not like normal urine but i can’t tell if its clotting. I’m a little worried if im honest and just wondered if anyone has similar story to mine from this procedure?
im not a soft arse either i can handle pain and push through so for pain to floor me like this is not usual.

sounds like you need to get back in touch with the urologist via whatever contact number was in your discharge paperwork. It could all be within the realms of what they'd expect and that just more pain relief is needed (antispasmodics sometimes help if the pain is from the stent), but they may want to have a think about more antibiotics (you'll have had some intraoperatively to try and prevent infection).

Thats what was done yesterday & from them checking op notes I wasn’t given any antibiotics only given ibuprofen in Theatre.

Ive had urethral dilation twice and cystistopy. The urination pain did take a few days, but the stent might be making it more painful for you. I'd contact your urologist. I did end up getting a UTI after both mine aswell.

the antibiotics will be on the anaesthetic chart. Have never not given anti-b's for that sort of case (usually a dollop of gentamicin unless your kidneys are knackered or your pre-op urine grew something resistant to it)

Thank you. I will give it tonight and if no improvement or anything worse i will get intouch with them again. Just doesn’t fill me with hope after how they treated me yday tbh.

Ok thank you. No kidney ok at the moment although surgeon was very surprised about that after seeing how tight my ureter is.
