Allergic to 3 antibiotics - what else treats uti's?

RealLifeClanger · 01/10/2025 18:02

I am now allergic to trimethoprim, nitrofurantoin and doxycyclene. Also have severe side effects from cefalexin. Are there any others that treat uti's that maybe won't make me feel like I've been poisoned? I've just had to stop nitrofurantoin yesterday after side effects got increasingly worse and now have hives cropping up even after stopping it.

Hiprex. Not an antibiotic but works great.

TheFairyCaravan · 01/10/2025 18:06

I’ve had a long course of erythromycin before now. There was talk of sending me for IV Gentamicin, too.

I’m in a similar boat, although I can take Trimethoprim, so am waiting to see a urologist for my frequent UTIs.

MumoftwoNC · 01/10/2025 18:08

I've been given amoxicillin for UTI before but obviously speak to the gp because maybe you can't have that either

MumoftwoNC · 01/10/2025 18:09

If the side effect is nausea then probiotics can help but I wonder if it's mostly placebo really

LemondrizzleShark · 01/10/2025 18:10

Amoxicillin/augmentin. Ciprofloxacin. Fosfomycin.

Frazzledandfried · 01/10/2025 18:13

Pivmecillinam, amoxicillin can be used for UTIs if youre not allergic to penicillin. Fosfomycin is another option. It does depend on whats on formulary locally though and what local patterns of resistance are too. Have they sent off culture and sensitivity so they know you're being treated correctly?

Nevergotdivorced · 01/10/2025 18:16

I swear by D-Mannose.
Read up on it, it’s available online or from good health food shops, do not buy anything but pure D-Mannose, the one with cranberry is rubbish.

MumoftwoNC · 01/10/2025 18:20

Oh yes I've had co amoxiclav too which is called augmentin as a pp said.

I had about 9 UTIs in my last pregnancy

MumoftwoNC · 01/10/2025 18:23

Separately, when I was struggling a lot with the UTIs, I also struggled with vaginally imbalances. A doctor at the hospital suggested a probiotic vaginal pessary and it has honestly changed my life. I think it reduced my UTIs a bit too as it's all connected down there isn't it

Mary46 · 01/10/2025 18:43

You poor thing op. They shit. Cant shift mine 2nd antibiotic. Im 50s he said I needed a stronger one. We see

Mary46 · 01/10/2025 18:49

Im on this Ciprofloxacin 500mg

RealLifeClanger · 01/10/2025 19:17

For those who have suggested ciprofloxacin, I would recommend looking up the side effects. I personally would only ever take that med as an absolute last resort. Didn't even know it was in use here. It's been in use in the US for a long time and they are apparently trying to phase it out due to so many serious side effects.

Thanks for the other rec's, good to know there are options out there. I've had a sample sent off but only after the half a course of nitro, they didn't do it initially.

I agree, D-mannose works, and is completely natural.

Tettritet · 01/10/2025 22:09

Another vote for hiprex it is not an antibiotic but a bladder antiseptic.

Yeah. Second that about cipro. I was on it for 1 day and I became very jaundiced. Liver was damaged and it’s taken years to recover from. Would not have touched it if I’d read up on it first.

Ellie54320 · 01/10/2025 23:01

Oh god please be careful this is what happened to me 7 years ago and I’ve been through hell since, I just kept bouncing from one short course of antibiotic to the next and ended up with antibiotic resistance and in such a mess. Please get tested properly so you know what you’re dealing with and get on the correct antibiotic.

Themedat · 01/10/2025 23:09

My daughter nearly died of a systemic UTI at 6 weeks old. She had a whole bundle of IV antibiotics and I can’t remember all the names but some mentioned here such as ciprofloxacin and gentamicin ring bells. They checked her liver after and was full function. Unfortunately she had lasting damage on her kidneys but that was from the infection not the antibiotics.

RealLifeClanger · 02/10/2025 06:45

@Themedat how awful, I hope she is doing well now. I got a severe uti in hospital after having my daughter and was given IV gentamicin. Very strong stuff.

@Tettritet does hiprex actually treat infections or does it just prevent them? I can't figure it out.

RealLifeClanger · 02/10/2025 06:59

@Ellie54320 did you manage to cure it in the end or are you still struggling? I've suffered uti's all my life and now becoming very intolerant to so many antibiotics. Going back to the gp today as obviously only half the course of nitro didn't work so need something else.

wandawaves · 02/10/2025 07:02

Side effects aren't allergies.

And you need to ask a doctor, not MN.

RealLifeClanger · 02/10/2025 07:42

@wandawaves believe it or not, I know what constitutes an allergy, hence I said severe side effects to cefalexin (which incidentally didn't even work). I've been to the Dr's twice already about this uti and going again today so how about less of the patronising tone? Due to antibiotics being incredibly hard on my body, it helps to be as informed as possible.

Canephron is a herbal tablet that can be used both preventatively and for treatment. Also worth getting checked out for underlying infections like ureaplasma/mycoplasma and there are vaccinations available against UTIs and thrush these days. All of this I found out because I happened to move abroad after years of misery, so I hope it might be of use to someone else too x

Thank you, she is thriving but has the kidney damage and will need an operation for urinary reflux. Thinking of that; have you had that checked? You can have it at birth to varying degrees but I think I read with age it can also get worse.

RealLifeClanger · 02/10/2025 08:52

@Themedat I think most of my issues are down to lichen sclerosus unfortunately. Only recently diagnosed with it but it's been there for years.

@Pindakaas thanks, I'll look in to that herbal tablet.
