I posted on this thread about his depression

in the past he has done martial arts but he had done it for years and years and just got bored. He was going to go running but his back has been giving him a lot of trouble and he has been advised not to run it because it will jar.

I know that exercise is really good for depression and wondered if anyone had any ideas for things that I could steer him towards?

(sorry, haven't had time to read your other thread)

Cycling? You get all the aerobic benefits, but much less jarring of back/knees etc. And the all the fresh air benefits

A good bike shop (eg NOT Halfords; try Evans Cycles or Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op) will be able to advise on appropriate bike style depending on his back problem.

My friend & I have been cycling since January preparing for a 600km charity ride in August. She has a bad back (discs worn I think?) and was worried cycling would affect her back but she's had no probs at all (her bike is quite upright). I had mildish PND last year, and feel as high as a kite during and after bike rides. Much better than the anti-Ds

It's something the whole family could do with him at various levels, also aiding the feeling of wellbeing

Ditto cycling. Dh loves it and is now a complete bike nerd, plus he is super fit and feels great about himself. And he can sit down while he does it.
