Who takes protein powder?

39 and looking for a boost. Feeling shite lately and wondering how I can boost my general health. What’s everyone’s thoughts on protein powder?
I’ve recently started collegian and I take a general multi vitamin.

Similar age. All the medical professionals are telling me it’s downhill from here.

get more sleep. Take magnesium and zinc to support this.

creatine is also essential for women our age.

Onto your actual question - take protein powders if you wish. Anabolic gold is best but costly. It has a lot of calories in. If you have it, make sure you’re not just adding 250 odd calories. Have it with an apple for breakfast or instead of milk with porridge/cereal. I don’t have it but I have meat or eggs with every meal including breakfast. I should have it but the taste…

@ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler getting sleep is tricky lately. A 4 year old who’s up and down with sleep. Also high functioning anxiety can get me up from early in the morning.

I’ve read creatine can contribute to hair loss? Have you any info on this. I’m already losing so much hair at the moment, along with some other symptoms. So can’t afford to make that worse? I want to start strength training also. I need to get stronger and healthier.

Urgh, I remember those days. I can’t help with 4 year olds… they are a law unto themselves. I haven’t heard about it but I asked DP who is the one who does all the research into fitness supplements (I look at how to keep me young; collagen etc) and he simply said “yeah it’s bullshit”. I’ll take a look tho. He swears by creatine and has a great hairline.

I do. A clear one every morning. I also put a scoop of collagen in it. I am on Mounjaro and I find the protein helps me go to the toilet.

I use protein powders to help me up my protein on days I’m struggling to reach my goal. I’m not sure it’ll help you in boosting your general health, but getting protein is important in your diet and helps you feel fuller for longer.

Protein can make a big difference in combination with exercise, particularly resistance exercise, but doesn't really make a difference on its own. And I'm guessing with a 4 year old there's not much space in your life for exercise! Physical play that involves lifting your child can be surprisingly good resistance exercise, and you can often make use of playground equipment while watching them. (I did my first chin up on the playground monkey bars!)

But if you want to make the biggest difference, instead of spending money on the protein powder, save it for an hour of babysitting or gym creche time so you can get a bit of time for yourself! Great if you get to use that for strength training, but even just headspace is so important for wellbeing.

Walking in fresh air, rain or shine every day is the only thing that I actually FEEL does me good. Bear in mind that I'm 68 and have had serious illness challenges (now hopefully overcome) which left me three stones lighter and I didn't need that! So I take vanilla protein powder every morning with Greek yogurt, fruit, chia and flax seeds and berries. I am so full after that, that I often don't feel like eating much until about 5pm, but I force myself.

The protein is especially important as we age to keep muscle tone etc. But in addition, I repeat, fresh air exercise (walking for me) every day is beyond compare. There is absolutely nothing that would entice me into a sweaty gym ever. I do lift dumbells when I think of it, and stand on one leg, and try to get up off the floor etc. But I usually end up swearing and just put my shoes on lol.

I use soya protein powder in my porridge. Specifically Pulsin brand. It's very high in protein and I heard soya isoflavones are good to have during perimenopause.
