Autumn allergies misery

I feel miserable. Constant itchy nose and needing to sneeze. Sneezes are huge and hurt my chest and throat. Eyes are puffy and itchy. Eczema flares up. Asthma gets worse.

This is the third year in a row I’ve felt like this at this time of year. Starts end on Aug and will last pretty much until Christmas. I have good weeks and bad weeks but it doesn’t seem to go away. I’m having to take antihistamines every day as well as decongestants. My nose is either like a tap or so blocked I struggle to breathe (I can’t seem to breath through my mouth when I sleep so it ends up I have crap sleeps)

Went to the gp last year who prescribed a different type of antihistamine. This worked better than the one I was taking but still didn’t eliminate the symptoms. A nurse did a blood test which came back that I was reacting to ‘something’ but they could tell me what 😵‍💫. Dr referred me to the immunologist (I think 🤔) last December but haven’t heard anything since.

I feel so grumpy and irritable all the time with it, and I know there’s a lot worse things I could be suffering from but it really is very frustrating!

I am definitely sensitive to dust, but I’m not sure why it would affect me more at this time of year?

Anyone else suffer from allergies at this time of year, and have you found out what’s causing them?

My poor nose is cracked and peeling and my eyes are so bloodshot I look like I’m constantly hungover 🙈.

Have a read about autumn hayfever, it could be that? Usually weed pollen at this time.

NellyTimes · 29/09/2025 06:16

I've been suffering the past couple of days as well, apparently there is a lot of weed pollen at this time of year, so I think it's probably that. I use Beconase spray which usually settles it after a few days and has practically cured my summer hayfever. Only started using it again yesterday so hopefully will kick in soon.

Another thing around this time of year is mushrooms, so walks in the woods tip me off around about now.

Genehuntsfanclub · 29/09/2025 06:36

Could it be an allergy to mould?

WideOpenBeaches · 29/09/2025 06:44

It’s almost like a switch is flicked for me.

It’s definitely some kind of decomposition of some sort for me…so I reckon mine is mould/ fungi. I can’t eat mushrooms either.

It ramps up once the autumnal dampness kicks in.

The asthma nurse we see for the DC talks about having allergic asthma during the autumn, so this time of year is clearly a trigger for some. Worth looking into? Could an inhaler help? I am not a medic so no idea if this would be appropriate!

sleepfortheweek · 29/09/2025 13:25

Thank you.

I do have to take my inhaler more at this time of year which helps my chest but not the other symptoms.

i don’t get hayfever in the summer, very bizarre! It’s actually in the house more I feel it than outside. Cohn’s behold but the house isn’t damp 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sorry, last sentence should read ‘could be mould’

I could have written this, I’m suffering exactly the same. I get into a cycle of dependency on those Sudafed blocked nose sprays because it’s the only way to sleep. I’ve been thinking about going to my doctor about it but I don’t have an answer I’m afraid. If you find one, please do post back on here and let me know!

I get mould allergy at this time of year - I live near woods and fields and it triggers my asthma and sinus issues. Asthma nurse advised me to ramp up my inhaled steroids to 4 puffs daily and start using mometasone nasal spray - two sprays each nostril twice
daily and daily antihistamine in August, so my airways were in good shape before the start of mould season in September and to carry on with it through the winter months before tailing down in spring (I’m symptom free in summer). This is working so far. Do you have access to an asthma nurse who can advise you with your own tailor made plan ?

PeonyBlush10 · 02/10/2025 07:55

I suffer with all the mouth breathing and feeling rotten symptoms as you and I think the key to success for me is starting treatment before mould season starts and before symptoms appear but I’m sure an asthma nurse at a GP practice could really help you with symptom control.

Just to update you. I’ve been given an appointment in th ‘anaphylaxis’ unit next week, which is a 3.5 hr drive away. I’ll let you know how I get on.

not sure why it’s the anaphylaxis unit I’m going to as it’s certainly not life threatening to me, but maybe that’s just the name of the allergy clinic!
