Raynauds sufferers

annabannan · 26/09/2025 18:53

I suffer from Raynauds, badly in autumn and even worse in winter. With the cold weather coming soon any other sufferers got any tips. I already have hand warmers, wrist warmers and going to invest in Wool and cashmere socks. Any other tips?

No tips....my Raynaud's is very severe and it is hell! I take 2 showers or baths a day to get warm. There are drugs you can try but they didn't help me. I literally hate Winter and really need to leave the country.

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 26/09/2025 18:58

I found pregnancy a very effective treatment.

But I’ll be sticking to coats/vests/hand & wrist warmers (disposable and electric rechargeable), fingerless gloves, normal gloves, mittens, hats, scarves and many, many layers.

itsallsohard · 26/09/2025 19:00

I have learned that keeping my core warm actually does help with the extremeties. Though in the end there's always going to be that problem. I use oven mitts to get food out of the freezer now!🤷🏼‍♀️

Bookblanketteaandsympathy · 26/09/2025 19:02

As well as all the above dd started nifedipine 3 years ago, it was like a miracle drug. Obviously not everyone can be prescribed it but if its affecting your well-being greatly it may be an option.

FuzzyWolf · 26/09/2025 19:02

Even thought it’s my hands and feet normally impacted, I find keeping my torso warm really helps. I’m a big fan of Heat Holders and lots of layers. A thermos with a warm drink, even if it’s hot water and lemon helps me warm up inside as well.

You can get heated insoles for your shoes as well.

abracadabra1980 · 26/09/2025 19:05

Im certain I have this but haven’t pursued a diagnosis. Is one of the issues (apart from fingers and toes being cold and numb) being just cold in general? I have always been laughed at through my life for being ‘cold’. My dad used to keep the heating at a firm 18 when growing up. I’m only comfortable at 21 now - if I’m not moving around. Also I can’t sleep unless my feet are warm, so need bed socks.

Hinterland101 · 26/09/2025 19:05

Just try not to get cold in the first place! Easier said than done I know, but I’ve had it once I get an attack.

I wear thermal base layers under my clothes which helps to an extent but I’ve yet to find some gloves that actually work.

WhereAreWeNow · 26/09/2025 19:10

Agree with PP that it's important to avoid getting too cold in the first place.
I wear thermal layers, cashmere fingerless gloves, and a warm coat with good scarf, hat, gloves.
I keep a hot water bottle with me if I'm sitting working, or watching TV.
I swear by my heated blanket. It's really good for bringing your body temperature up if you've got really cold.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 26/09/2025 19:10

Hawthorn tea (I get it from Holland and Barrett) helps mine.
When I was pregnant I got it in my nipples!! Nothing helped that Sad

tinyspiny · 26/09/2025 19:11

I’ve had it for years , sometimes severe , other years barely bothers me . In the winter 1985 /86 I got frostbite in most of my fingers in the SE of the UK . I find wrist warmers better than gloves , always wear socks in cooler weather and always wear a hat in cooler weather .Back in the day I did try taking nifedipine but it didn’t work for me and because I also have extremely low BP it really didn’t help me and I was offered a sympathectomy but declined that as well .

flatroof · 26/09/2025 19:14

Fellow sufferer. It sucks. Doesn't matter what I wear/do, once I'm cold a hot bath is the only thing that helps.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/09/2025 19:16

Plastazote insoles from Amazon. We make the. In the NHS Podiatry clinic to keep the feet warm.

scrivette · 26/09/2025 20:19

I find that mittens work better than gloves, I bought some sheepskin mittens a couple of years ago and they are good. I also made my own heat bags with oats (or you could use heat pads) to carry in my hands which helped.

The oven gloves are a great idea - I have never thought of that!

Poisonwood · 26/09/2025 20:27

M&S heatgen max thermals, I use a vest one under a long sleeved one, then real wool jumper. Angora is the best. I also use cashmere wrist warmers and alpaca or mohair socks, regularly two pairs. Body warmer under a good quality mountainwear coat.

Uggs. Hot water bottles - often one gets taken to the car first thing in the morning as the wait for the heating can flare the Raynaud’s badly. lots of cups of decaf tea to warm hands on.

It can be soul destroying.

Zhu · 26/09/2025 20:32

I got it in my nipples too! I’m really not looking forward to the next 6 months. I struggled last year. I need to get better at managing it.

Squirrelsnut · 26/09/2025 20:39

Perimenopause cured mine. But I always found keeping my head warm was effective.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 26/09/2025 20:41

I have a heated steering wheel now, but before that I would use a sheepskin steering wheel cover during the winter.

MintTpls · 26/09/2025 20:45

Lambswool shoe liners in all your shoes/trainers !
keep your torso warm with thin thermals, heatgen thermal vests/tops from Uniqlo or M&S or Tesco version.
Thermal socks and lined gloves.
These save me every winter.

MoltenLasagne · 26/09/2025 20:50

Similar to others with things that work tbh. I've got my whole workday routine built around it now but it feels really early this year:
Sleeping in cashmere bed socks
Getting the shower warm before getting in
Dressing gown on the heated towel rail
Proper quality socks and the M&S heatgen thermals
Turtles doves wrist warmers if in the office
Heated blanket if working from home and also a heat pad that goes on my desk, under my keyboard.
An absolute game changer was discovering the proper gore tex Barbour chelsea boots - they actually make my feet warm, rather than stopping them getting cold. They take a bit of hunting down though because so many are just the fashion ones. I imagine the riding brand boots would be similarly practical as well, but they are very expensive.

Sugarahhoneyhoney · 26/09/2025 20:51

Not much helps. Perversely I avoid socks in the winter and wear worn in leather trainers so there is space for my toes. Socks make my feet colder then burn, then the chilblains appear.

Sheepskin Mittens beat gloves. I can't wear leather gloves, my fingers literally go numb and freeze immediately. I'm very jealous of people who can look smart in leather gloves instead of 12yr old brown worn in Ugg mittens!

Sheepskin slippers/boots, BUT I often have to take them off when I warm up as my feet start to burn. Then get chilblains. See the pattern?!

Wristwarmers are useless, my hands are white in them.

The thing is I prefer my body to be cool and I hate being too hot. So I can't bear loads of layers.

I had some Nifedepine prescribed the other day but I'm too nervous to take it as I have low blood pressure already. Also I didn't realise I have to take 3 a day! I might give it a go at half term when I don't have to drive and worry about passing out.

I do find that if I get VERY cold, lukewarm water is a better bet than hot water to warm up my hands.

Sugarahhoneyhoney · 26/09/2025 20:54

I think of one thing that works - if you need to wear wellies, wear Neoprene boots. And never wear more than one pair of socks, it will make it worse.

Peppaisrude · 26/09/2025 20:55

I've always run cold and had Raynauds most of my life, but some years it's definitely been worse than others.

I agree with most PPs but also (and it may sound obvious) the times that I'm able to keep it at bay the most always coincide with periods in my life when I'm working out a lot/keeping active. My circulation just improves generally so even when I'm sitting down I don't feel as cold as I would during periods in my life where I haven't been so active if that makes sense.

I feel the same, hate winter even though I love it over summer! Don’t want to take any drugs for it so just want to manage it as best as I can

Oven gloves in summer when getting ice out seem ridiculous but works
